Sony SEL18200 E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS User Reviews

A quality superzom
“If you can get a good copy, this lens performs significant better than comparable superzoom from other manufacturers. I have used the Canon 18-200, Nikon 18-200, and the Tamron 18-270 pzd. For NEX 7 buyers, this lens is worthy of its high demand 24MP sensor.” – By FlasH

Superb optics, build quality and effective stabilization
“the quality of this lens is just plainly superb. The distant test scenes from backyard I normally take with new lenses and cameras were outstanding and possibly one of the best I’ve ever had. The stabilization system works very well and I have no issues handholding the combo and getting clear pictures. The lens stops down to f6.3 at the max zoom length but this is compensated with the NEX’s low-noise high-ISO…” – by Richard Lau

One Great Piece Of Glass
“I waited for this lens to be released for my Sony Nex-5 and was not disappointed. The craftsmanship is outstanding and the performance is wonderful. “ – by Wendell

Excellent but heavy lens
“I was waiting 2 months and was lucky to get it here (new&used) a new lens at regular price with free shipping.
The lens is excellent, only big and heavy. “

Great lens
“I am relatively new to photography and got my Sony NEX-3 camera in Oct 2010 and finally found this lens available in early January 2011. I LOVE IT! I find the pictures are very crisp and clear. The lens has a good feel to it, smooth motion and very solid. The metal body looks nice too. The only complaint? Well it is a bit heavy, but I got used to it. “ – by cjb300zx

Excellent Piece of Glass
“The Sony SEL18200 lens was a bit hard to get hold of, but well worth the wait and price. I’ve had many expensive lenses over the years but this one, coupled with the Nex-5 technology, is the most versatile, functional and precise I’ve owned. Bulky, but worth every ounce, because of the range of situations in which this lenses produces fantastic pictures – and with ease of use. For walking situations, the smaller Nex-5 lenses are better, but for any situation where long schlepps are not involved, this lens will cover almost any amateur photo situation. What is exceptionally nice is to hang the camera on the neckstrap, tilt up the LCD and shoot with this lens, no tripod, but goood stability like the old film Mamiyas.” – by Wilson Kerby

Excellent for we, the novice photographers
“I was tired of purchasing point and shoot cameras once every year or two and being unhappy with my pics. So I purchased the NEX-3 and love it. A few months later I purchased the e-mount 18-200mm lense and absolutely love it. I have been able to take great sports pics of the kids, even in a hockey rink setting the pics are acceptable. I can’t afford a camera that would take flawless pics but this camera and lens are pretty close.” – by SportsDad

All in all a good lens
“I have been using this lens for about a month, so I think that I have a good feel for it. PROS: 1- It has one of the best optical stabilization systems that I have ever used. 2 – Its range of 18mm-200mm is amazing. 3 – It feels firm and solidly built. 4 – It produces crisp and sharp pictures when the light is good…” – by David R. Courtney

Should have bought one sooner
“After seeing pictures of it, and comments from others complaining about the size, I was initially steered away from the SEL18200. It does look ridiculous in pictures mounted on the slender NEX-5. But in person, it’s a different story. The metal build quality is superb, and feels great in hand…” – by UC Gamer

Features & Specifications

Sony SEL18200 E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Specifications

The Sony SEL18200 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Zoom Lens for NEX Camera is a can-do lens- an 11x 27-300mm (35mm equivalent) zoom that can handle everything from wide landscape photos to portraits to sports, action and even wildlife photography with the telephoto up to 300mm. And the results will be brilliant, with ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass that minimizes flare and greatly reduces chromatic aberration, fast internal focusing, 13 groups and 15 elements (including aspherical elements that correct visual aberrations across the entire zoom range) and a circular aperture for more pleasing out-of-focus areas. This lens is not recommended for use with full-frame DSLRs.

Features:
* Internal Focusing System : Internal lens elements move when focusing, so the overall length does not change — creating a lens that focuses more quickly and doesn’t change balance.

* Circular Aperture : Because aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.

* Aspherical Lens Elements : Three aspherical elements correct visual aberrations more effectively across the entire zoom range and help reduce weight.

* ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass : Two ED Glass lenses minimize flare and greatly reduce chromatic aberration, giving you sharp, clear shots even at full telephoto extension.

* Advisory When Using DT Lenses With Full-Frame (35mm Equivalent) DSLR Cameras : Sony a (alpha) lenses with the Digital Technology (DT) designation are ideal for use on APS-C size DSLR cameras and are not recommended for use with full frame DSLR camera bodies (such as the DSLR-A900).

If you’re going with the Alpha 100, and looking for a good, all-in-one design, then look no further.

Built specifically for digital, this is the Konica-Minolta 18-200 lens repackaged for the Sony, which included a bit of restyling. Optically, this is a solid performer. It’s not cutting edge technology, and won’t hold up to the rigors of professional…
