Sony DPP-SV55 Digital Photo Printer Reviews

Steves-digicams reviews the Sony DPP-SV55 Digital Photo Printer and writes;
“The DPP-SV55 printer may be just the solution you’re looking for if you want a simple way to print your digicam images with or without a computer. It’s as simple as plug the video cable into the “video in” connection on the front (or back) of most TV’s, insert your memory card, scroll through the pictures, pick one to print and press the PRINT button. It only takes about 90 seconds to produce a 4 x 6″ print.”

Sony DPP-SV55 Digital Photo Printer User Reviews

ink sublimination printer
“Easy to use! The picture color is absolutely incredible! I have a Canon S330 and printed straight from Memory Card (you’ll need the adapter) and the pictures are vibrant. I would guess that depending upon your camera resolution will determine the clarity of your pics. I have 2.1 pixels and the quality and clarity is incredible. There are several possibilities to print with this thing, so you re not limited. I love it. It’s small enough to transport if you wanted to…then you can print out high quality pictures anywhere. “ – by Michelle Proscia

Excellent, DURABLE prints
“For what it’s worth, I gave the same picture from my camera to 2 friends – one with the DPP-SV55, and another with the HP Photosmart 100. The HP compared better than I thought it would, but both my wife and I could see slight “banding” even though it was printed on the glossy HP 4×6 photo paper. The HP had a slightly “cool” color to it (tad too much blue), but as with the Sony’s “warm” tint, that can be corrected with software. To the HP’s credit, details were better preserved in the dark areas of the picture than in the Sony. (better shadow details)” – by A Customer

“This item is one of the best thing that Sony came out. The photos comes out just like the ones that you get at [local store]. A very awesome piece of devise if I do say so myself. “ – by Ricky W. Cancilla

Easy to use, but I had to buy it elsewhere
“Setup: too simple! Plug everything in, load the PC drivers, bring up your favorite photo program and away you go. 4×6 borderless prints in no time at all. I had no driver problems using Windows ME (as others have stated). The paper is easy to load, the printing ribbon simply slides into place, and the quality is on par with commercial prints I have had made in the past. I haven’t used the built-in features (since I prefer to enhance, crop, mess with photos on my PC before printing) but they look fairly straightforward.” – by Benny S

WOW… amazing
“Impressive. VERY close to photo-lab quality, you’d need a magnifying glass to tell the difference at 4×6. Even then I don’t know if you could tell the difference. I’m using a 3.2 Megapixel Sony P7 and the results are phenomenal. Hard to believe given the relatively low price of the unit.” – by A Customer

Excellent photos depending on OS
“the prints I got from my iMac and from my Windows 98 PC were not quite as nice! In both cases close inspection yielded visible pixelation on the borders of subjects in the image. Furthermore, with Windows 98, the number of colors was reduced, with visible transitions from one shade to the next. Perhaps the pixelation is simply because of the low-resolution source material, and that Windows 2000 has a better dithering algorithm for smoothing these pixels — that is, maybe this won’t affect you if you own a megapixel camera. But I can’t explain the lack of color ranges on Windows 98. Anyway, if you have Win2K, the prints are truly comparable to Kodak prints from an analog camera and the ease of use is excellent.” – by rgonzale

Sony Digital Printer- DPP SV55
“Great Unit, makes beautiful pix. Each time you print 25-30 pix on 3×5 or 4×6 you put in a new ribbon cartridge which comes with the paper. Couldn’t be happier, paid a very reasonable price from VDO Specialities. Great outfit to do business with! They were concerned with some early misgivings I had and called me! Offered to refund and pay for return, said they were going to refund my money anyway because of the misunderstanding! Guy named Mike Walker, super to do busines with!Highly recommend VDO Specialties!!” – by “efeiner”

Some hints for getting the best output
“This printer produces impressive output, although the colors have a little too much magenta. The resolution is specified as 403 dpi but to get a 1:1 pixel mapping from (say) photoshop you need to set the image resolution to 403.66 dpi. It is correct that Sony do not officially make the Mac OS X drivers for this printer available for download. They do ship on the install CD though. A google search for “DPP-EX5_EX7″ should locate the driver on the internet. “ – by Stephen Hoek
