Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Reviews

DigitalTrends reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“if you’re looking for a quality point and shoot that can double as your rugged cam, the TX5 is a great option. The touchscreen isn’t anything to be afraid of, even for those unfamiliar with it. And for general use, its size is definitely a plus, not to mention its iAuto and built-in scene options. However, for its price we’d expect some artsy filters or expanded editing capabilities.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

T3 reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“Generally, image quality is good, with pleasing vivid but realistic colours and reasonable sharpness . The Sony DSC-TX5 provides good results up to ISO 1600, which is above average. A brilliant compact camera, which is both good looking and super tough. Recommended.”
Rating: ★★★★☆ reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“If you are looking for a user friendly, sleek and compact digital camera that can easily be brought along wherever your travels take you, we do not hesitate to recommend the Sony Cybershot DSC-TX5. Based on our experience with the Sony DSC-TX5 we assign the camera a solid 8/10 for a combination of image quality, construction, performance and handling. In our opinion one of the better models in its class. .”

PhotographyReview reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“I’ve really enjoyed my time with the Sony Cybershot TX5 – enough that I’m considered buying it from Sony. Plus, time spent in the pocket of my sandy swim trunks left it not quite as pretty and polished as when I received it. It still works great, though. I can honestly say it’s my favorite waterproof point-and-shoot camera yet – and I’ve used a bunch.”

TrustedReviews reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“The Sony Cyber-shot TX5 is a remarkable camera, a sleek and attractive pocket compact that is just as tough as most of the military-grade rugged compacts. Build quality is superb, the touch-screen interface is versatile and easy to use, performance is outstanding and the picture quality is superb. My local camera shop tells me that this thing is flying off the shelves, and I’m not at all surprised. “
Rating: ★★★★½

Pocket-lint reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“Under ideal shooting conditions the Sony delivers warm and colour-rich images that are sharp enough. Squeezing a wide-angle lens into a small space has had a slightly detrimental effect in that we noticed a loss of sharpness towards the corners of our frames when shooting at the widest possible setting. “
Rating: ★★★★☆

GeekZone reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“I’ve been using this camera for about a month and I’m disappointed to give it back. It really is a great piece of technology, and if you’re looking for a camera for everyday use, you can’t beat this little beauty. “

Imaging-resource reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“Chromatic aberration at wide-angle is noticeable, with bright blue and red pixels on either side of the target lines. Telephoto, however, shows almost no visible distortion, except a hint of blue on the left side of the target lines. A very good performance for such a small, waterproof digital camera.”

PhotographyBlog reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 allows you to take panoramic images very easily, by ‘sweeping’ with the camera while keeping the shutter release depressed. The camera does all the processing and stitching and now even successfully compensates for moving subjects.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Photoreview reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“Video quality was good at the highest resolution setting – but not quite as crisp and sharp as clips from the HX5V. This is to be expected as the latter camera can record 1080p clips, while the TX5 is restricted to 720p. Soundtracks were adequately clear but the camera is quite vulnerable to wind noise – and no wind cut filter is provided.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Digitalcamerainfo reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 and writes;
“The Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 is a small camera that takes high quality images with good color and plenty of detail. We also found that the images that it captured had low noise and that the special shooting modes that the camera offers produced great looking results.”

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 User Reviews

Great little point and shoot | Rating: ★★★★☆
“I originally purchased the camera to use while kayaking, so the waterproofing was a priority. I tested this in a glass of water and a sink. Video and picture functioned fine underwater and the camera is still functional afterward.” – By Stacy

Great Camera! | Rating: ★★★★★
“The large touchscreen and easy touchscreen controls were both an added bonus with the TX5! It was great to be able to use our good quality camera on water rides and at the pool where many other cameras couldn’t go! The underwater picture mode takes amazing high quality color pictures, and the video mode works very well underwater even at night!” – By David A. Young

5 star camera with 4 star results. | Rating: ★★★★☆
“Overall, if you are getting this camera for the purpose of being waterproof(and more durable than normal) then you will be pleased with everything else it offers. There are as good or better cameras out there for specific functions but if you are looking for a camera that takes good photos, is snappy, has a bunch of fun and usable features, and is waterproof then this should be very high if not at the top of your list! ” – By Brian Douthit

Good for the amateurs | Rating: ★★★★☆
“I like the quality of the videos, pictures and size. Perfect to carry in your pockets or whatever. I took it on a adventure race I did recently and had no problems. Sweat, rain, and yes even under water and have had no problems. So far so good. Worth the price.” – By J. Morgan

Small, Nice Features, super fast, | Rating: ★★★★☆
“the cybershot is a very good small camera with a lot of easy to use features. Very fast, good for action, and portable enough to be in the action. variable photo quality, but usually good to very good. I’m still playing with the cybershot so there may be more good things or more bad things about it, but so far I’m fairly happy with it. ” – By Carson Lawall

Easy Touch Screen Interaction
The DSC-TX5 offers intuitive functions to the multi-purpose touch screen, such as the ability to select the focus point with a simple touch, scroll through images by sliding your finger across the screen and one-touch access to the MENU. Hand-held Twilight
Capture cleaner and sharper night shots without using a tripod. When set to Hand-held Twilight Mode, the DSC-TX5 captures six images in a fraction of a second with one press of the shutter, and combines the data from all six to create a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise. With these modes, you can capture images in low light, without flash, beyond the capability of traditional cameras.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama Mode

In addition, the DSC-TX5 employs a mechanical shutter that helps reduce distortion when continuously shooting moving subjects.

HDMI Output
The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI™) is a compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams. HDMI connects digital audio/video sources such as a compatible camcorder, Blu-ray Disc™ player, a personal computer, a video game console, or an AV receiver to a compatible digital audio device and/or video monitor such as a digital television (DTV).

HD MP4 Movie Mode9
In 720p MP4 movie mode the camera shoots 1280 x 720 high definition movies at 30 fps, the perfect format when working with a PC. Users can create high quality movie files small enough to transfer to compatible PC or Mac®. Once transferred to your computer you can effortlessly upload your media to popular photo and video-sharing websites such as Photobucket® and YouTubeTM. (Compatible PC with Internet connectivity required)

Self-Portrait Timer
Self-Portrait Timer helps take the guesswork out of self portraits by utilizing Face Detection technology to recognize when your face enters the frame. Once the camera detects your face, it triggers a 2-second timer, and then snaps a picture.

BIONZ® Image Processor
The BIONZ® image processor delivers the high resolution and fast performance you expect from a Sony® digital camera. Fast processing enables unique Sony features such as Sweep Panorama, Handheld Twilight, Antimotion Blur, HDR, etc to take and combine multiple images in less than a second to create wide panoramic images. Images have reduced grain and appear less washed out.

Intelligent Auto (iAUTO) mode
Unlike traditional auto mode, Intelligent Auto (iAUTO) mode thinks for you, recognizing scenes, lighting conditions, and faces, and adjusts settings resulting in clearer images, faces with more natural skin tone, and less blur. By incorporating advanced features such as Intelligent Scene Recognition, Face Detection technology, and Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization, iAUTO mode lets you take advantage of the latest Sony® Cyber-shot® technology without leaving auto mode. Whether you’re shooting landscapes, capturing a beautiful flower, or taking pictures at an in-door birthday party or wedding shower, iAUTO mode will optimize your camera’s settings to help ensure you come away with a great shot.

Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode
Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects nine different types of scenes and, within just 1/30th of a second, selects the appropriate camera settings: Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a tripod, Portrait, Landscape, Macro, and Close Focus. iSCN has two modes: Auto and Advanced. In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. In Advanced Mode, the camera takes a photo with the optimal settings and, if in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with another optimized setting so you can choose which to keep.

Anti-blink Function
It’s frustrating to think you’ve captured that perfect shot, only to review it later and discover one of your subjects blinked just as you pressed the shutter. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting or blinking. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot.

Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization
Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization uses a built-in gyro sensor to detect camera shake and automatically compensates to help prevent blur without sacrificing image quality.

High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200)
High ISO allows for faster shutter speed, so you can take photos indoors or in low light without the need for a flash. In addition to High Sensitivity Mode (ISO), you can select up to seven ISO settings (Auto, 125, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200) when shooting in Program Auto Mode to adjust sensitivity to your shooting conditions.

Face Detection technology
Sony’s Face Detection technology can automatically distinguish between children and adults. Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and adjusts flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of family and friends.

Motion Detection
Motion Detection, along with Face Motion Detection adjusts ISO sensitivity and increases the shutter speed when movement is detected, reducing blur in moving subjects and faces.

Smile Shutter™ technology
Smile Shutter™ technology captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply press the Smile Shutter™ button and the camera does the rest. You can also select adult and child priority and indicate the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity. Intelligent Scene Recognition can be used together with Smile Shutter™ mode. This means that beautiful smiles can be captured with settings optimized for the particular scene, even in difficult conditions such as twilight and backlighting.

One Response to “Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5”

  1. Kameron says:

    The zoom button tab on my tx5 fell off after about a week. no marks on the camera, no scratches, bumps, or marks of ANY kind. Sony refuses to warrant because it is physical damage. When I pointed out that it was clearly a casting flaw in the button, the service technician told me “Yes, but it is still physical damage no matter the cause and your warranty is now void……….” Shame on Sony for not taking care of their customers and standing behind their products. I’ll spend my money elsewhere next time.
