Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 Reviews

CNET reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and writes;
“Full-frame sensors are typically found in professional dSLR cameras. The 24.3-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor in the RX1 seems identical to the one found in the Alpha SLT-A99, also announced today. These sensors tend to give less noise when shooting at high ISOs and gives shallower depth-of-field compared with consumer-oriented APS-C versions found in budget and midrange dSLRs.”

Stuff reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and writes;
“Paired with that huge sensor, the lens helps to produce the sort of images you’d normally get from a high-end DSLR: rich, low in noise and (provided you use the right settings and composition) with an attractively smooth, out-of-focus background. It’s unusual – and very cool – to see shots like this coming out of such a compact camera. Likewise the 1080p videos look fantastic.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Adorama reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and writes;
“This camera has two Autofocus modes: Single-shot AF (AF-S) or Continuous AF (AF-C), which tracks moving objects. It also has Manual Focus for manual focusing freedom, and Direct Manual Focus (DMF), that first uses autofocusing to focus on the subject, and then allows fast and easy switching to manual focusing for even more precise adjustment. “

Ephotozine reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and writes;
“The Sony RX1 is clearly capable of delivering extremely high image quality with a sharp Carl Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 lens on the front. The camera is roughly the size of a medium sized mirrorless camera with a compact fixed lens on the front, but with a full-frame sensor its noise performance is excellent, and for those who are looking for the highest quality in the smallest package available, the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 is an excellent camera, particularly if you have the money to afford it.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Photographyblog reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and writes;
“This camera really does deliver DSLR-like performance and image quality in a pocketable format, music to the ears of most enthusiasts, with the exception of the auto-focusing speed, which lags behind the very best contrast-based systems.”
Rating: ★★★★½

Pocket-lint reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and writes;
“The lower ISO shots are crisp, clean and clear – all the “c”s – and look great. Exposure is balanced, as is auto white balance, and we have very few qualms in terms of image processing and noise reduction.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Imaging-resource reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and writes;
“The Sony RX1, whether it’s for you or not, answers a sincere desire in the marketplace for a return to that full-frame sensor size with excellent quality optics in a very small package. “
rating: N/A

Digitalcamerainfo reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and writes;
“It’s that feature alone that sets the RX1 apart from all previous compact digital cameras. Paired with the camera’s high-quality Carl Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 Sonnar T* lens, the RX1’s image quality could very well be on par most professional cameras.”
rating: N/A

Engadget reviews the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 and writes;
“Native ISO range goes from 100 to 25,600, which can be extended as low as 50, and as high as 102,400 thanks to a feature dubbed Multi Frame Noise Reduction (simply put, many shots are combined to make one clean image in low-light conditions).”

This is one amazing Camera and yes, I have it in hand
“Amazing quality even at f/2 and JPEG mode. Some will hate on this and never hold it or use it just due to the price but IMO it is well worth the cost if you want a camera that can fit in your coat pocket and provide some of the most amazing results with an ease that no other camera can give you. The RX1 is the real deal, and my pick for best camera of 2012.” – By Steve Huff

REAL REVIEW
“the IQ is fantastic. Right now Lightroom is unable to handle RAW so I’ve been shooting JPEG, and they are fantastic. Ive uploaded numerous photos unedited straight out of the camera JPEG on flikr and people have been amazed at the quality. Second, the handling of this camera is great. There is no shutter lag and the shutter is completely silent, making it a fantastic street camera.” – By A. Wright

For Photographers
“Having just unboxed my new RX1, I have to say that my first impressions were that it reminded me slightly of my Leica M6 in heft and feel.. I’ve only just started shooting some samples but so far I found the Carl Zeiss lens to be sharper and tonally smoother than my Canon 35mm f1.4L lens, which is pretty impressive to say the least. Highlight blooming is also less.” – By Jules D

Just finished shooting this camera over the weekend
“I just finished shooting with this camera this past weekend in asia. The image quality of JPEGs is amazing. I have not used RAW yet. My usual system is a Canon 5d III and I can say that the quality is very comparable. In fact, I prefer the 35 mm on the RX-1 to Canon’s 35 1.4L. It has a bit of magic like the 851.2 L II and the 50 1.2L.” – By aanative

Amazing high ISO performance but slow autofocus
“In a dim-normally lit room, the pictures shot at ISO 6400-10,000 at f/5.6 IQ was quite good. IS0 6400 images perhaps are more like ISO 1600 images from NEX6/7 and ISO 2500 from XE1. In comparison to the same images shot with D700 at iso 6400 and up, my eyes tell me that RX1 wins hand down in image cleanliness and IQ.” – By Lyle Kimms

EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for!
“In color with all NR turned off, the luminance noise is very film-like, though there is some chroma noise (very easily removed in PS). In black and white, ISO 25,600 is genuinely printable at 8×12″ (possibly further, though I hadn’t tried).” – By Sean

The camera we have all been waiting for (almost perfection)
“I have been shooting the RX1 for a few days and am completely blown away with the results. I have also shot w/ a Leica M9 & X1, Fuji X100 & Nikon d700. This camera very well may be the best of the bunch. The combination of size, build quality and amazing glass+full frame sensor is quite an accomplishment for Sony.” – By Scott B. Lanehart

Pre-delivery evaluation of the DSC-RX1
“In the RX1, Clear Image Zoom magnifies the image up to 2X and processes adjacent pixels to result in full frame 24.3 MP images. Calculated, Clear Image Zoom magnification at 1.4X = 50 mm and at 2X = 70 mm. Thus, with 2X Clear Image Zoom and the aperture wide open to f/2, the RX1 becomes the equivalent of a prime 70 mm portrait camera with depth of field control. Crank up the portrait setting to ISO >2000 for dramatic available light effects and the portrait may become a masterpiece.” – By RXIchiban
Rating: ★★★★★

Outstanding travel camera
“In exchange for the awkward controls, you get excellent performance. The RX1 contrast-detect autofocus is reasonably fast and accurate even in lowish light… Bottom line: the Sony RX1 is small and quiet and ideally suited as a travel camera. It can take outstanding pictures. I’m keeping mine.” – By Noirist
