Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM DT Reviews

Ephotozine reviews the Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM DT and writes;
“At 18mm, sharpness in the centre is already excellent from f/3.5, and peak quality is achieved at f/4 where the centre is still excellent, but the edges are very good. Diffraction starts to reduce the resolution slightly after f/5.6 but the lens still performs well down to f/16 at this focal length.”
Rating: ★★★★½

SLRGear reviews the Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM DT and writes;
“For a kit lens, the Sony performs quite well – sharp wide open at 18mm, reaching its best performance when stopped down to ƒ/5.6 or ƒ/8. It’s a definite improvement over the previous kit lens, the 18-70mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 DT.”

Kurtmunger reviews the Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM DT and writes;
“Optically, this lens is better in nearly every way than its predecessor. Feel free to use the lens at any aperture, and zoom length and don’t worry about sharpness or color fringing. If you shoot at or near 55mm, one stop down will produce the sharpest shots. Macro shots are much larger and sharper than on the old lens. Optically, Sony really did a good job re-designing their new “DT” kit lens. I think it will easily match up to the Canon and Nikon in optical performance.”

User Opinions

Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM DT User Reviews

Very impressive | Rating: ★★★★★
“The colour fringes are almost completely gone — there’s just a hint of purple/green occasionally — and general sharpness and image quality are improved. It also has a shorter minimum focussing distance for close-ups. The “silent” autofocus is quiet but definitely not silent, not that I’d ever really needed or wanted silent autofocus anyway. Build quality feels up to the standard of the Sony camera bodies, unlike the old one which always felt like a poor relation. “ – by Willopad

great starter lens | Rating: ★★★★☆
“If you never intend to shoot telephoto shots and all your work is in the wide-angle to portait range the 18-55 is an excellent choice. It is sharp from 5.6 to 11, but soft if you open up or close down further. Vignetting and chromatic aberration are insignificant at mid-apertures but suffer a bit at full aperture.” – by entoman
