Shutterbug has reviewed the Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM Lens where they write;
“…The advanced optical formula and digital optimization allowed this zoom to produce snappy contrast as well as incredibly high sharpness across the entire frame at most apertures and focal lengths. Optimal performance was provided in the 70-140mm range. I never hesitated to shoot at f/2.8 at these focal lengths when necessary for fast shutter speeds or shallow depth of field. By f/4, edge sharpness matched central sharpness. At longer focal lengths, central sharpness was high at wide apertures but I recommend stopping down to f/5.6 for the best edge sharpness…Anyone who still doubts that a zoom can match a “prime” lens should certainly try this one—it’s an eye opener. In terms of sharpness, resolution of intricate details, snappy contrast, freedom from flare and from color fringing, it is definitely an outstanding performer. The very wide f/2.8 aperture is often useful for stop-action photography or for shooting at lower ISOs whenever flash or a tripod is not practical. Overall, this zoom’s optics, autofocus, and build quality make it a professional instrument intended for those who want a superior “fast” telephoto zoom and are willing to carry a hefty, oversized lens. “
Popular Photography Magazine has reviewed the Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM Lens and writes;
“Like Sigma’s earlier version, this lens is large (over 10 inches long, with hood) and heavy (more than 3 pounds)…The manual focus collar spins smoothly, with a long turning radius that enables very fine manual focusing. The zoom ring turns stiffly, but it will probably loosen with use. Its AF action, in the Canon mount, is fast and very quiet, thanks to Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM)….The bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits this new Sigma lens to a wide range of applications, including portraiture, sports, and, of course, low-light work. Its uniform close-focusing distance of just under 40 inches, its 1:3.3 maximum magnification ratio, and its ultrasilent HSM AF motor combine to make this a compelling choice for nature and wildlife close-ups, too.”
ePhotozine has reviewed the Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM Lens and writes;
“A pleasing improvement over it’s predecessor which is well built despite the weight saving. It feels right. The petal hood is also an improvement that is a better fit, especially when reversed. The addition of HSM makes a considerable improvement to the autofocus speed.
The weight and size made this a comfortable lens to keep on the camera all day when appropriate. The only drawback over some of the marque lenses is the lack of a stabilisation system, but this is accounted for in the price, which is excellent.”
TheDigitalReview has reviewed the Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM Lens and writes;
“If you can get a good copy of this lens, it is definitely worth the price – which is significantly less than the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM Lens counterpart. There are more similarities between these two lenses than there are differences. Would I rather have the Canon? Sure, but the sizeable price difference makes the Sigma the right choice for some. The Sigma 70-200mm F/2.8 EX DG HSM Lens turned in good real world performance. The value is there. “

Large aperture zoom lens with a minimum focusing distance of 100cm, optimized specially for digital and 35mm SLR cameras.
The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of the new 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM lens. This large aperture zoom lens has a minimum focusing distance of 100cm (39.4”) throughout the entire zoom range. It`s maximum magnification of 1:3.5 makes it ideal for close-up photography. The lens uses two ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) and two SLD（Special Low Dispersion） glass elements for excellent correction of various chromatic aberrations. The power layout and multi-layer lens coating reduce flare and ghosting, a common problem with digital cameras, and also create an optimum color balance and excellent picture quality through the entire zoom range.
