Pentax SMC DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Reviews

Photozone reviews the Pentax SMC DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited and writes;
“The lens is capable of producing very sharp and contrasty images at medium aperture settings. At large apertures the border quality is somewhat softer so it may not be the first choice for available light photography (handheld) … assuming that you can find a better one. The vignetting is hefty at f/4 so it’s advisable to stop down here anyway to get rid of the problem as well. The amount of barrel distortion and lateral CAs is pretty decent for a 15mm lens.”

SLRGear reviews the Pentax SMC DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited and writes;
“Chromatic Aberration is well-controlled, at 6/100ths of a percent of frame height in the corners and just 3/100ths of a percent on average. Happily, this performance doesn’t really change between aperture settings.. It’s unlikely to see such a wide-angle lens without any form of distortion, and to Pentax’s credit they’ve controlled it well, with just +0.3% barrel distortion registering in the corners, and less of that throughout the image.”

Pentax SMC DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited User Reviews

What a great lens?! I would not mind to sleep with one! | Rating: ★★★★★
“DA 15mm is unique in many regards. First, it has a built-in lens hood which is made of high quality metal and has a very tight fit. Second, the focus ring is silky smooth and well damped which reminds me of the K and M era Pentax manual focus lenses. Third, it uses 49mm filters. I have not seen any other lenses in this focal length that uses 49mm filter. Fourth, the resolution is high and its resistance to flare is remarkable. Finally, it is ultra compact and yet extremely solid in hand. These charismatics make it the best choice for travel and for shooters who would like to have a wide angle lens but do not use it all the time.” – by Zhou Yu

Features & Specifications

Pentax SMC DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited Specifications

When mounted on a PENTAX digital SLR camera body, this new lens offers a 23mm angle of view in the 35mm format, letting the photographer capture unique, eye-catching images with visual effects unique to ultra-wide-angle lenses, such as enhanced perspective and an emphasized depth of field. It can be effectively used to capture eye-catching images of such subjects as sweeping landscapes, magnificent architecture and confined interiors. The PENTAX Limited Lens series is designed for the ultimate in image reproduction, combining a series of mechanical and numerical evaluations with human assessment of test-shooting samples. True to this tradition, this new lens not only assures excellent image quality, but also produces sharp, clear images with outstanding contrast, even at the maximum aperture. This is because its optical design has been optimized for digital photography. In addition, its lens barrel, hood and cap are all made of a high-grade aluminum material and shaped for perfect proportions and striking beauty. This lens incorporates a hybrid aspherical (AL) lens and an extra-low-dispersion (ED) glass optical element to assure high-quality image reproduction with minimal aberrations, including lateral chromatic aberration. Compared to other ultra-wide-angle lenses, its image distortion is also compensated to a minimal level. Thanks to its newly developed optics, this lens is designed extremely compact and lightweight despite its ultra-wide-angle perspective. Since it has no dome-shaped protrusion at the front end, the photographer can mount commercial 49mm-diameter filters, including circular polarizing filters popular in landscape photography.
