Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Reviews
Lenstip reviews the Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II and writes;
“The new model doesn’t give way to the old one in any aspect and its results are definitely better when it comes to the image resolution, chromatic aberration correction and astigmatism. Those interested in buying a Pentax reflex camera don’t have to think about changing the kit lens right away because they get with the body a good instrument almost free of charge which performance is really satisfactory.”
Photozone reviews the Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II and writes;
“Pronounced vignetting and reduced contrast are also present at f/3.5. At 35mm and 55mm the situation is much better. CAs are very well controlled. The build quality is good for a kit zoom and a level up from the rest of the gang such as the Canon EF 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 or Nikkor AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 ED. “
Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II User Reviews
Pentax DA 18-55 AL II for a Pentax Pro | Rating:
“The original kit lens was quite good for general use and serves well for newspaper shots, but not up to pro standards for high resolution work. Enter the AL II designed for the newly introduced high resolution Pentax K20D: The new AL II has improved the resolution across the entire focal range, from corner to corner. Border softening is dramatically reduced, and the original lens vignetting is all but eliminated. Pentax has made a very good kit lens noticably better.” – by James Rahrig
Nice improvement | Rating:
“This lense is a nice improvement over the original 18-55MM. You have about a 1 F-stop change in light transmission. The edges are much clearer. This is the best kit lense by far compared to any competitor. “ – by Bill A. Farley
Surprisingly good optics for a value-priced lens | Rating:
“A noticeable improvement over the first edition of this lens. Lightweight and small and the optics stand up to the much higher priced lenses. I recommend this lens to anyone interested in a great lightweight walk-around zoom. “ – by LG
Pentax 18-55 da II zoom lens | Rating:
“Love the color rendition and contrast this lens produces. Even if your wallet is overflowing with cash, the lightweight flexibility and insanely low price makes it want to travel without fear of loss, damage, or cramping your style. Can’t comment on the original version, but many tend to equate more $$ = better pictures.” – by Robert W. Dunsworth
Great Value | Rating:
“The low price on this lens comes from the build quality, not the optics quality. The lens is light and feels cheap, but the pictures it takes stand on their own. The focusing ring feels gritty, and it can be tough to achieve a perfect manual focus, but it’s hard to beat the quality of the glass itself in this price range.” – by David T. Getsfrid
Excellent Performer all through! | Rating:
“I was looking for a decent wide angle lens and had read about the AL I version of this lens. Upon researching more I figured out this version (AL II) of the 18-55 lens doesn’t have the issues of previous 18-55 AL I. The 18-55 AL II lens has very low distortion,practically no PF and the “light fall off at the edges” problems with 18-55 AL I have been fixed. “ – by janorkar
great lens | Rating:
“the quality is great and from what I’ve seen the lens is fairly sharp, without much chromatic aberration. The only complaint I’ve had with it is that the auto focus doesn’t work well in areas that it considers dark, which aren’t very dark at all. Overall though I’d say that this lens is worth the money if you are looking for a wider lens with good lens characteristics. “ – by Leland W. Mark
Solid Upgrade to the Pentax Kit Lens | Rating:
“at 18mm F/3.5: The Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II has more contrast, sharpness, especially on the corners, but it is still soft. At F/5.6 both lenses improve in sharpness but the Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II stays ahead. At F/8 both are almost equally sharp at center but the The Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II still has sharper corners. The The Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II clearly has less Vignetting at all apertures at 18mm. “ – by Aldo R. Perez
