Panasonic Lumix 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 G Vario ASPH MEGA OIS Reviews

Photozone reviews the Panasonic Lumix 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 G Vario ASPH MEGA OIS and writes;
“The center resolution is on a very good to even excellent level straight from the max. aperture setting and the border and extreme corners are generally very good. At 42mm we’ve an evenly high quality across the frame. Furthermore, the vignetting is still comparatively pronounced at 14mm @ f/3.5 despite the auto-correction. However, it’s not really an issue any more at other settings.”

SLRGear reviews the Panasonic Lumix 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 G Vario ASPH MEGA OIS and writes;
“The Panasonic 14-42mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 is very quick to autofocus – the lens takes well under a second to slew through the entire range of focus. Small changes in focus are conducted extremely quickly, and there’s very little noise when the lens focuses.”

PCMAG reviews the Panasonic Lumix 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 G Vario ASPH MEGA OIS and writes;
“I used Imatest to check the quality of the lens when paired with the Lumix DMC-G5.. At the midpoint of its focal range the lens does better. At 24mm f/4.5 it records 1,897 lines, which increases to 2,168 lines at f/5.6 and 2,193 lines at f/8.”

Ephotozine reviews the Panasonic Lumix 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 G Vario ASPH MEGA OIS and writes;
“Although other lenses in this range may be able to turn out slightly sharper images, the compact size of this lens and excellent build quality will still win over many fans, especially those attracted to the Micro Four Thirds system for compactness.”

Panasonic Lumix 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 G Vario ASPH MEGA OIS User Reviews

Much Better Than I Expected
“It focuses quickly, silently and accurately. It produces photos which are very sharp and I particularly like the way the camera/lens combo renders colors.. What I really would like is a faster lens, say 2.8 that didn’t cost over a $1000. All that aside, I’m very impressed with the photographic capabilities of the Panasonic gear and this cheap little lens in general.” – By PiddlinRob

light, small, inexpensive lens for daylight use
“14-42 is a very small, very light lens. Yes unlike the other two m4/3 lenses in my arsenal, 14-42 is made in China (the others in Japan) and has plastic mount (the other two have metal mount). It also costs $199, comes with a hood, and focuses silently and instantly, in any light. It focuses quieter and faster than 20mm F/1.7 for sure. It has build-in Image Stabilizer.” – By D. Brodsky

Typical Kit Lens
“I’m spoiled. I bought the Lumix GF-1 body and 20mm lens separately. /That/ lens is a killer. It looks, feels, and functions like a high quality lens.. It works o.k.; no terrible fringing and not terribly soft. A decent plastic starter lens. It’s no more and no less than what I expected. You won’t be disappointed for the price. ” – By Kailua Steve

Okay kit lens
“PiddlinRob summed up things nicely. Decent kit lens on my Lumix G3. Fast auto focus. Relatively small aperture does not do it any favors for portraits as far as getting a nice bokah. My biggest knock is that in manual focus mode, it focuses past infinity. This makes celestial photography a pain since stars are pretty hard to see on the viewfinder while composing a shot.” – By Jeff Wilson

5 stars for the price and usability
“The only real reason anyone would bash this lens is if they’re using it wrong. This is NOT a lens for low light situations. That said, it’s still not bad in low light. If you move around and get your shoot position right, you can still get useabe results. In a well lit environment or sunlight this lens shines. Good for portaits and everyday photography in good lighting.” – By muttonchops

Good inexpensive zoom lens
“As a basic kit lens, it can be appreciated for the compact size, lightness and adequate optical performance. It also has consistently fast auto-focus. In my opinion, while the 14-45mm is slightly better, the 14-42mm is just perfectly fine at half the price.” – By JunjieW

Not Bad
“Overall, the Panansonic 14-42mm does an admirable job for a daytime or travel lens if I don’t need the speed, thin depth-of-field or extra bagspace. It focuses almost instantly and is inexpensive, sharp, and well underated.” – By carolina2834

Well it’s a kit lens
“For me, the M43 kit is my portable / backup system. I’m not sure I want to invest a ton of money there as I have a nice DSLR system but this lens is cheap enough to be a no-brainer if you don’t have it and I think it gets a bad rap because of spectacular nature of the 14-45. If you’re in the market for cheaper than the 14-45 and decent performance, here you are.” – By J. Settle
