Canon 20D and 17-85 VS Canon 5D and 24-105

Canon EOS 5D

Philip Harle comparing the EOS 5D/24-105 f4L IS combination with its precedessor, the EOS 20D with Canon 17-85mm f4-5.6 and wrote:

“The 5D and “L” lens, as might be expected, is a little better, but the chromatic aberration is still fairly minging. At 3200ASA, it’s a different story. Both results are softer and noiser, but the 5D is clearly the better of the two.

The 5D and 24-105L combination is better than the 20D and 17-85. No surprise there. Really, the results of my tests are that there are no surprises. The 5D is as good as I expected it to be, and I expected it to be amazing. For my travel purposes, it is better than the chunky EOS 1Ds, making it the best camera currently available, indeed the best camera ever.”

Canon 17-40 F/4L VS Canon 24-105 f/4L IS VS Canon 24-70 F/2.8L Photo Samples

WSlam has just posted his comparison shots from Canon 17-40mm F/4L, Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L and the new Canon 24-105mm f/4 L IS at his website. Here’s his comment about the test:

“Due to poor weather here in Hong Kong, I had to take these indoor. The camera (EOS20D) was mounted on a tripod. White Balance was obtained from a grey card and applied during RAW conversion. All photos were shot in RAW, connverted into unsharpened JPG then resized and sharpened in PhotoShop CS2 (Smart Sharpen 80, 0.8, Lens Blur). Everything was done in batch, so all the files received the same ‘treatment’. Full Size (zipped) are unsharpened. Focus point is on the dog’s right eye (the one on the left).”

Canon EOS 5D Field Report by Michael Reichmann

Canon EOS 5D

Michael Reichmann has just posted his field report on a pre-production Canon EOS 5D at Luminous Landscape and wrote:

“The 5D produces images essentially as good as those from the 1Ds MKII – and that’s about as good as it gets. It has slightly lower resolution, of course, but with some theoretical advantages associated with larger pixel size and more recent sensor chip design.

The bottom line then is this – the Canon 5D is an immensely satisfying camera. In a physical size, weight and form factor it is little different than the mainstream of 5 – 8 Megapixel APS sized cameras. But Canon has, with the 5D, provided photographers with a full-frame 35mm of sufficient resolution – 12.8 Megapixel – to meet the print and reproduction size needs of the vast majority of serious photographers. Image quality, whether at normal or at high ISO, is as good as it currently gets. “

Canon 10-22mm VS Sigma 10-20mm Sample Photos

Canon 10-22mm vs Sigma 10-20mm

Some sample shots from Canon 10-22mm and Sigma 10-20mm with 100% crop have just been posted by Dougal in Canada.

Here’s what Dougal says about his test:

“My test limits the Canon to 20mm and F-stops identical to those of the Sigma. For simplicity I’ll only provide wide open (obviously the Canon is stepped down a little) results.

I used two scenes for each of the two focal lengths. Draw what ever conclusions you wish…

All images were processed in CaptureOne with no sharpening and Identical exposure and white balance settings. ISO setting for all shots was ISO100, F4 (10mm) shots were shot at 1/800s and F5.6 (20mm) shots at 1/400s. A cable release was also use to operate the shutter.”

Nikon D50 review by Patrick Singleton

Nikon D50 Review & Sample Shots

Patrick Singleton from DigitalCameraInfo.com reviewed the Nikon D50 Digital Camera and wrote:

“Nikon didn’t come out with a consumer level 8 megapixel DSLR in response to the Canon Rebel XT, and Nikon partisans no doubt insist that most people don’t need 8 megapixels and would rather have lower noise and more vibrant color. Fair enough – that’s a reasonable opinion, though we’ll have to see whether or not it prevails. In any event, the D50 unquestionably yields vivid, low-noise pictures, while also providing users with manual controls and customizable parameters. Furthermore, the D50 body is durable, with a logical and uncluttered array of controls. As a kit or just the body, Nikon created a package as good as anything on the market for beginner SLR users and priced it extremely competitively. For under $800, consumers will get every bit of their money’s worth. “
