Olympus Zuiko 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 Digital ED SWD Reviews

CameraLabs reviews the Olympus Zuiko 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 Digital ED SWD and writes;
“Its optical performance is superb, delivering very sharp results across the frame at all focal lengths. The SWD auto-focusing is very quick and quiet, and unlike the motor-assisted manual focusing of most Four Thirds lenses, the mechanically-linked system here feels tactile and responsive. “

Lenstip reviews the Olympus Zuiko 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 Digital ED SWD and writes;
Pros: very solid barrel, sensible dimensions when you take into account its wide focal lengths range, good fastness, weather-sealing and the presence of an SWD motor, outstanding or very good image quality in the frame centre at all focal lengths and aperture values, very good image quality at the frame edge on slight stopping down, chromatic aberration well-corrected, good distortion results, when compared to those of competitors, slight coma, very low astigmatism, very good work against bright light, silent and efficient autofocus. Cons: too high vignetting at the shortest focal length, a better performance at maximum relative aperture would be needed to make the lens really perfect. .”
rating: N/A

Photoreview reviews the Olympus Zuiko 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 Digital ED SWD and writes;
“The 25mm focal length setting provided the best overall resolution, with the 50mm and 60mm focal lengths delivering slightly lower quality, although overall resolution was high in the main.”

User Opinions

Olympus Zuiko 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 Digital ED SWD User Reviews

Wonderful lens | Rating: ★★★★★
“The wide end let me take more photos in confined areas and the long end was long enough to get decent magnification on short telephoto shots. It also did a nice job on closeups, although I didn’t really spend a lot of time thinking about that use. I use an E-510 camera body and found that focusing was much faster and more precise with this lens than the the kit lenses. That was a major improvement. “ – by Brian L

Olympus Zuiko 12-60mm | Rating: ★★★★★
“I tried the prime 50mm but I wanted more flexibility. The 12-60mm was exactly what I needed for short to mid range photos. My recent wedding pics were excellant. I had a very large family to shoot and very short range to do it in so this lens was awesome!” – by G. Proctor

Lense of first choice | Rating: ★★★★★
“I bought this lense about ten days ago and have been using it with my E-510 ever since. Last weekend I took a couple of hundred shots at my sons basket ball tournement with the 12-60mm. The results were excellent. Much better than what I would have been able to achieve with the 14-42 lense that I had been using on previous occasions. The lense focusses fast and is very sharp. I am very pleased with it. “ – by Rik de Bruijn

Perhaps one of the best general zooms | Rating: ★★★★☆
“Image quality: for the technical analysis, one has to consult with the various website etc… However, subjectively, this is capable of producing very nice images. “ – by Harry M. Shin

Could not live without this lens | Rating: ★★★★★
“This lens has a really good macro capability, in fact it has more range than many lens past and present. I would recommend this lens over the kit lens any day of the week. I used it for my son’s baseball games, my daughter’s football games, and a few other events. It is extremely fast, both with light transmission and focusing.” – by D. T. Jones

this is a great lens | Rating: ★★★★★
“It handles head-on lighting without flare, has a pleasant bokeh, and is useful as a macro—since you can step considerably back, use the 120mm setting and get good image size.” – by Dennis E. Wood

Phenomenal little standard zoom, | Rating: ★★★★★
“If you’re a 4/3 user at some point you need to try out this lens! This and the 50-200 SWD plus the 50mm macro are in my opinion “must-haves” for any 4/3 shooter. Solid, built like a tank, weather sealed to keep the elements out and such FAST focusing. I shot with the original Mk1 14-54mm which is a good lens but sat on the shelf once the 12-60 arrived.” – by MEDISIN

A must have for 4/3 system | Rating: ★★★★☆
“the quality is great and much better than the kit lense but you need to be aware that the biggest F is 4.0 when you zoom to 60mm rather than straight 2.8. “ – by San Ching

Features & Specifications

The Zuiko Digital ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 SWD lens is a high-performance standard zoom lens that covers a zoom range equivalent to 24 to 120mm on a 35mm camera lens. Special optical glass elements are used to correct various types of aberrations, while the 100 percent digital design ensures high-definition performance with clear, crisp images from edge to edge. This lens also boasts impressive close-up shooting capability, allowing users to shoot from as close as 25cm throughout the zoom range.

The lens’ autofocus is powered by Olympus’ breakthrough SWD. Designed to be the world’s fastest AF system, this extraordinary autofocus drive provides both high speed and high precision while operating with lower noise than ever. Optimized for use with the new E-3, this lens enables the camera to demonstrate the full power of its high-speed capability, providing the fastest autofocus available in the world using a standard zoom lens.

About Supersonic Wave Drive Technology Olympus-proprietary SWD technology has enabled an ultra-fast, whisper-quiet, high-precision AF system. Two compact, high-powered Supersonic Wave Drive devices power autofocus at an ultra-high speed by exciting unique elliptical oscillations, while an ultra-compact 5.3mm x 4.3mm optical encoder detects and controls the lens drive position using direct rotation detection without reduction gear. This enables it to achieve a level of precision that’s accurate to 5 microns (5/1000 mm).

When used in combination with the new E-3, which offers improved AF computation and lens-body communication rates, the SWD motors provide the fastest focusing speed of approximately 170 ms (0.17 seconds).
