Olympus Stylus 790SW Reviews

Megapixel reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Indoors, the unit’s performance was adequate. Without a flash, subjects tended to be softly focused… Overall, the photo quality of images captured with the 790SW was a cut above the average point-and-shoot camera.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

ImagingResource reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“While we really like the looks, function, and ruggedness of the Olympus Stylus 790SW, it doesn’t deliver pictures of sufficient quality for a 7.1-megapixel camera. Images are almost always soft in some part of the frame, thanks to excessive noise suppression at all ISO levels.”

USAToday reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
Pro: Compact point-and-shoot is waterproof, shockproof and dustproof, within limits. Takes decent pictures. Con: Controls could be friendlier. Slight shutter lag.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

ThinkCamera reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“if your photography never once strays outside the comfort zone, you don’t need anything more than splashproofing, if that. If your life is one long advert for feminine hygiene products (horse riding, rollerblading, windsurfing… ) and you want a camera to document your active lifestyle, the Olympus µ [mju:] 790 SW fits the bill perfectly.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

LetsGoDigital reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“For me, the lack of a good wide angle is unacceptable. It is not done nowadays. Also the strongly apparent signal/noise ratio when using ISO 400 and up is a pity..I would recommend the Olympus Mju 790 SW for this specific target group. If however you want to dive deeper into photography you might want to take a look at the SP560 that Olympus offer. ”
Rating: ★★★½☆

PCAdvisor reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Photo-wise, out of the water, the Olympus Mju 790 SW delivers well-saturated evenly exposed pictures with real oomph – the primary colours really make an impact. This is unusual given that Olympus digital images usually suffer from a more washed-out look.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

TrustedReviews reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“The Olympus mju 790 SW is a welcome return to form for a series that has seen some image quality and performance problems. It offers a simple specification and basic feature set for the price, but apart from the disappointing video mode it performs well and is capable of taking high quality pictures in situations that would defeat most other cameras. If you’re looking for a stylish compact that you can take almost anywhere, the 790 SW is the ideal choice.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

CameraLabs reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“if you’re the kind of person who’d love to take photos in wet or snowy conditions but reluctantly leaves your camera at home for safety, then the Olympus 790 SW is definitely one to consider. The quality may not be the best around, but it simply allows you to take photos in conditions where other cameras would fail. Outdoor and adventure sports enthusiasts will forgive the downsides and instead embrace the picture-taking opportunities of a camera that operates in the same conditions they do. As such it comes Recommended, but only for those who really need the tough and underwater capabilities.”

Cameras.uk reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
” There are not many waterproof, shockproof and weatherproof cameras out there. If you are expecting the very best in picture quality you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for a fun camera to use at the beach then this one is worth looking into.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

ComputerActive reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“As likely to appeal to those who regularly hit the slopes of Aspen as much as those who simply want to splash about with the kids in Majorca, the Mju 790 SW’s impressive features and very fair price tag mean it’s hard to level too much criticism at it. If tip-top image quality is your primary concern, however, there are better alternatives.”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

DigitalCameraReview reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Like the first Stylus, the 790 SW is capable of capturing very good snapshots and memory photos with little effort on the part of the photographer. If that’s not enough, the diminutive 790SW is built like a tank and can be taken along on active outdoor adventures (like back country hiking, rock climbing, off-road biking, snorkeling, skiing, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, hang gliding, and white water rafting) that would oblige most users to leave the digital camera at home.”

Steve’sDigicams reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Image quality was quite good for a 7-megapixel consumer model. When shooting outdoors, the images captured were well exposed, and had excellent color saturation…Bottom line – the Olympus Stylus 790 SW is a good digicam for the active user needing a weather resistant/water proof camera ”

WashingtonPost reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Colors are more accurate than its predecessor, the Olympus 770SW, but that’s not saying much because the 770SW performs so poorly. Skin tones have an unflattering greenish hue; the poor colors are partly a result of the inaccurate white balance system. Images are not properly exposed in low light, and resolution isn’t as detailed as it should be. The Olympus 790SW improves upon the 770 in terms of noise and color, but is generally on par with cameras that cost much less.”

InfoSync reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Unfortunately, right out of the box, it took pretty mediocre photographs. We were also extremely disappointed by the built-in limitations in the video mode. Ultimately, Olympus delivered on their promise of a tough-as-nails, yet pretty-as-flowers camera, but was off the mark delivering what we want a camera to do: take great pictures..”

PhotoReview.au reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Close-ups were, however, impressive, especially with the Super Macro mode, although we observed some sharpening artefacts in our test shots. Digital zoom shots were a little soft but not severely artefact-affected. Image noise became obvious at ISO 400 and very obvious by ISO 800. We would not recommend the use of the ISO 1600 setting.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

GoodGearGuide reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Image noise was fairly minimal, with the 790 scoring 0.54 per cent at ISO 100 in Imatest’s noise test. This is a strong performance; however, we did notice a little blotchiness in areas of block colour even at this low sensitivity. The noise ramped up as expected as we increased the sensitivity. Shots captured at ISO 400 should be fine for small prints but this is as high as we’d go.”

CNET reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Image quality isn’t the 790 SW’s strong point, but it isn’t particularly bad either at lower ISOs. Colors aren’t quite as saturated as they can be on some other cameras, but they do look fairly accurate…The bottom line: If you need a camera that you can take snorkeling or skiing, then the Stylus 790 SW might be just the ticket, but you can find better image quality for the same price.”

Rating: ★★★½☆

CNET.UK reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Start-up is reasonably quick, with no annoying company logo… The Olympus mju 790 looks good, handles well and takes respectable quality images. A poor screen is the only real let-down, but you’re paying a premium for the waterproof, shockproof, even freezeproof ruggedness”
Rating: ★★★½☆

InfoSync reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“The Stylus 790SW is an average digital camera wrapped in one of the most outstanding packages we’ve tested. The combination of style and durability in the casing is phenomenal, and we loved that no matter how much we beat it up, it took shots just as well as it did right out of the box…Ultimately, Olympus delivered on their promise of a tough-as-nails, yet pretty-as-flowers camera, but was off the mark delivering what we want a camera to do: take great pictures.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

Photoxels reviews the Olympus Stylus 790SW and writes;
“Overall, good image quality for a 7.1MP digital camera. Despite the availability of high ISOs, the Stylus 790 SW is not a low-light camera, but for its intended purpose of sunny beach, boating, and rough outdoors, the Olympus 790 SW can be expected to capture good image detail and colours.”
