Olympus SP-800UZ Reviews

CNET reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“The good: 2GB of built-in storage; one-touch movie recording; full, searchable user manual stored in camera. The bad: Soft, noisy photos above ISO 200; long shutter lag; ineffective image stabilization; no electronic viewfinder; poor battery life. The bottom line: If you care more about having a long lens at a low price than photo quality or manual controls, the Olympus SP-800UZ is an option.”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

ImagingResource reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“Overall, this isn’t a very good printed performance; one of the worst we’ve seen, in fact. If you don’t think you’ll print larger than 5×7 at most focal lengths, and you don’t crop much, you’ll never notice. “

MacWorld reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“# Pros: 30x zoom; 14-megapixel resolution; 2GB internal memory; smaller form factor than direct competitors. # Cons: Few buttons and controls means manual operation is convoluted; no EVF; no Raw shooting; can’t record video with zoom and sound at same “

Steve’sDigicams reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“You can see that the overall image quality is very good, producing excellent exposures and sharp images with good color in both Program and iAuto shooting modes. …With very good image quality and performance, this camera is perfect for anyone looking for an easy to use digicam with as much versatility as possible.”
rating: N/A

PCAdvisor reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“Thanks to Olympus’ built-in Shadow Adjustment technology, detail is preserved in dark areas of the Olympus SP-800UZ’s images, exposures are even, while colours are naturalistic rather than overly saturated. “
Rating: ★★★★☆

DCR reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“The SP-800UZ does best at the lowest ISO levels. Noise starts to intrude at 100 ISO and becomes more evident at 200 ISO. Noise levels and softening from noise reduction increase at 400 ISO through 1600 ISO. Color seems to be fairly consistent throughout the ISO range.”

PCW reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“Good points 30x optical zoom lens; small proportions; large internal memory. Bad points Fiddly to find settings in menus; have to choose between zoom and sound when shooting video; no optical viewfinder”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

CNET.uk reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“If you need a camera with a long zoom range and compact form factor, and you’re prepared to make a few compromises, the Olympus SP-800UZ superzoom will be worth a look”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

PhotoReview.au reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“Buy this camera if: You’re looking for a low-priced superzoom digicam that can record 720p HD video clips, You want plenty of scene pre-sets for shooting both video and still pictures, You’d like to take ultra-close-up photographs of small subjects.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

TechTree reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“you get a camera with an absurdly long zoom, good image quality and HD video recording. Unfortunately, the camera fails when it comes to manual control over the camera settings and the menu navigation isn’t particularly intuitive or convenient. If better control is what you desire then you would do better with a cheap DSLR, such as the Canon EOS-1000D. But if all you need is a high zoom camera with basic features and good image quality, then the Olympus SP-800UZ fits the bill”
Rating: ★★★½☆

PocketLint reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“for those who want a DSLR in a more portable package – the SP-800UZ more obviously stands apart from its competitors, most of which you’d imagine to actually be DSLRs from a cursory glance”
Rating: ★★★½☆

Photographyblog reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“Overall, we have found the Olympus SP-800UZ a unique camera with a remarkable lens that caters mostly to the needs of the point-and-shoot brigade. Experienced photographers might find it a bit limiting”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Photographybay reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“In daily use, the SP-800UZ is mostly pleasant to operate. Even without the buttons for quick settings that I am accustomed to on similar superzoom cameras, the SP-800UZ manages just fine. While I would prefer faster access to modes and common settings like flash and timers, I became pretty comfortable with working my way through the menu system and changing shooting modes.”
rating: N/A

Cameras.co.uk reviews the Olympus SP-800UZ and writes;
“On the whole focusing works well enough. There is little evidence of sharpness being lost to any great degree at the edges of my test shots. The glare from the sun is also handled well enough by the SP-800UZ. “

Amazing Camera, | Rating: ★★★★★
“The zoom is incredible and and super close up pictures are the best I’ve ever taken. I’ve seen some other reviews that have been critical of the camera’s few manual settings, but, seeing as how I’m an extreme amateur I like the auto settings. Taking good pictures is more important to me than being a good photographer.” – By Donna J. Parker

Amazing Camera, | Rating: ★★★★★
“The telephoto is HUGE. Stock, out of the box, I put the camera on a tripod and took a photo of the full moon with the quality of a telescope. Even without the macro or super-macro turned on, I can focus blades of grass at less than an inch. Telephoto is roughly 28mm to 480mm. On screen menu of features means you can shift settings on the fly without leaving your subject. SLR body type performance in a compact size. Awesome! ” – By Henry C. Wolford

Cheaper than a DSLR! Picture quality still good | Rating: ★★★★☆
“Stable photos with great zoom in a handheld seem very hard. Stick it on a tripod and they really become much more clear and easier to take. The Macro setting is crazy. You can literly touch what you are taking a picture of with the lens and still take a great clear picture.” – By Ronald Ellis

Great Camera for amateur and professional | Rating: ★★★★★
“The digital age makes it so easy to take and discard photos that you like and don’t like and you end up with the ‘perfect picture’ that you wanted. 14 megapixels will ensure you never have to worry about quality of reproducing photos and since we don’t reproduce any photo over an 8×10 we know it will come out perfect. ” – By Gary Vengley

Great Camera for sports! | Rating: ★★★★★
“I bought this camera specifically for taking pictures of my daughters playing sports. I have to say it is awesome when I first got the camera it took me a couple of volleyball matches before I figured out how to set up the camera to take the best action shots…. I also took pictures of the high jump, long jump and hurdles and they were awesome I can not say enough good things about this camera for action shots. Better than I expected at a better price!” – By kcarter71

“I takes great pictures and has lots of options to give you great photos. The other negative is no guide book except on line which means if you want to carry it with you – you have to download and print the manual- not user friendly. ” – By P. beaver

I Love this camera | Rating: ★★★★★
“I’m not professional. This camera is surprising me in many ways. I will go on vacations next week and them i’ll write a review” – By Didou

My 70th birthday gift to me; worth the 70 year wait!, | Rating: ★★★★★
“This camera is an excellent choice for anyone who needs quick-grab family shots, crowded event photos, travel pictures taken from a bus window, and then miraculously, having the ability to completely capture the most exquisite architectural detail from great distance, or preserving the macro beauty of everyday items, or freezing any instant in time–enhancing, filtering, or distorting for impact.” – By Mary the Gator

I’ve just had this camera for 3 days & love the zoom which gives clear pictures at full zoom, even without a tripod. I took a regular picture of our back farm yard & you can’t even tell that there’s an old building back there, but it fills the viewfinder with the 30x zoom.
I also love the explanations along with the icons and initials in the LCD screen. I’m from the older generation and I hate initials!
The picture I took facing the sun turned out very well also.
I’m sure I’ll have more comments as I get used to it and use it in more situations.
