“Flare: Same. The older lens was pretty good when shooting into the light, and the new lens seems only a tiny bit better. I haven’t shot enough in indoor arenas to see if the Nano coating helps with ghosting, but i suspect that it does from the few examples I’ve looked at so far. Still, the old lens wasn’t bad in this respect, so the new lens is just pushing “very good” into “very good.”..”

At small apertures such as f/11 or smaller, diffraction starts to affect the resolution, but not devastatingly so, with the lens still performing well enough right down to f/22. Images produced by this lens have fantastic contrast, which adds to the overall impression of sharpness…”

I’ve had the original 80-200 f/2.8 AFS, the 80-200 f/2.8 two-touch, two of the 70-200 f/2.8 vr lenses (the first was stolen) and now have the 70-200. It’s fast, sharp, works well with the TC-14e teleconverters and has little vignetting. I’ve used it primarily on a tripod and shooting landscapes, but even hand-held the VR keeps the image sharp.” – by L. Angier

“Typical Nikon “Pro” lens quality, construction, and performance. It is a bit heavy, but not unexpected considering the aperature and VRII capabilities.
