Nikon 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR Reviews

PhotographyBlog reviews the Nikon 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR and writes;
“Our own verdict is that while the new 24-120mm lens might not be cheap, it may well be the only lens you’ll ever need (unless you are looking to shoot architecture, sports or wildlife professionally, in which case you’ll probably need to buy a couple of specialised lenses).”
Rating: ★★★★☆

ePhotozine reviews the Nikon 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR and writes;
“Flare and ghosting is well controlled by Nikon’s Nano Crystal coating. A little flare and loss of contrast may show when shooting into a bright light source, but only in extreme circumstances. Light sources outside of the frame may also cause a slight loss of contrast, especially at the telephoto end. A petal shaped lens hood is supplied which does an excellent job of keeping unwanted light off the front element and I’d recommend using it all of the time.”

Nikon 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR User Reviews

High quality general use lens; not the best value for everyone, | Rating: ★★★★★
“I have now shot with the lens on my D3. In the center of the frame it is almost identical to my 24-70 2.8. Excellent center sharpness. It is a bit less sharp in the corners, but I am very impressed.. When compared to the well-made 18-55mm kit lens, this lens shows somewhat better sharpness at the same aperture. Overall I would conclude that this lens is sharp, but not “perfectly” sharp.” – by dlazzaro

Pretty good., | Rating: ★★★★☆
“On a D700, impressively sharp and reasonably contrasty at 24mm but with lots of barrel distortion. Pretty good at 120mm but stop down 2 stops for good corners. Best stop, f/8. VR works great. Flare resistance is simply amazing and it focuses so close you’ll think you’re going to hit the front element. Oh–and it has a new style rear cap that makes a sort of seal against the lens flange.” – by Coronet Blue

Best 24-120 attempt yet, | Rating: ★★★★☆
“In a nutshell, this is a very different lens than either of the earlier 24-120 products. It handles differently, it’s constructed more ruggedly, and it’s faster all the way around. The best way to describe it is to say that it’s very similar to the 16-85 in terms of image quality, but scaled up for an FX body. That is to say, it’s sharp, offers good contrast and color, and not so much distortion that you can’t correct it in post processing.” – by Busy Executive

Excellent travel lens, | Rating: ★★★★☆
“The 24-120 doesn’t perform quite as well at the long end. I compared to my Nikon 70-300mm and the 70-300 was clearly sharper at the edges at all focal lengths and apertures. Again not much difference in the centre… However I did notice the 24-120 has good contrast – certainly better than the Nikon 24-85. After a lot of pixel peeping I took the lens out for some proper photography. I took some great shots – sharp, contrasty and loved the flexibility of this lens.” – by Paul W

I do not own this lens (I have the previous version), but have just seen images using the 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S NIKKOR taken on a D700. I’m afraid the green/magenta fringing on both sides of the images was absolutely terrible. Worse than that using the previous lens on my D200, which has always been something of a problem in this area.

For me this range of zoom is perfect and I got quite excited about this new f4 one. But it looks a real dog. As I’m looking to upgrade to a D700, I can’t imagine buying this lens
