Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX Reviews

Cameralabs reviews the Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX and writes;
“The Nikkor DX 18-70mm offers much more than just an extra 15mm over the most basic Nikkor kit lens – it’s a step-up in every respect. The build and optical quality are superior, the maximum aperture when zoomed-in is brighter, the focusing a little quicker, the end section doesn’t rotate when focusing, and it comes with a lens hood.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

SLRGear reviews the Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX and writes;
“Chromatic aberration is also unusually low across most of this lens’ range, with worst-case values less than 0.03% across most of the focal length range, rising only at the maximum telephoto end of its range.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Bythom reviews the Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX and writes;
“Flare performance is quite good except for direct into the sun. Unless light is hitting directly on the front element, I’ve not seen any visible contrast degradation. Autofocus is very fast and mostly hunt-free. As I noted in my 17-55mm review, the primary focus speed difference between that lens and the 18-70mm comes in terms of the maximum aperture and in low light. Distortion performance is very good.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Photozone reviews the Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX and writes;
“The Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED DX is a lens with many souls. The lens is capable to deliver very good resolution figures and low CAs but on the other hand distortions as well as vignetting are very pronounced specifically at 18mm. However, most users will rarely use large aperture settings at 18mm so the vignetting problem is usually no show stopper. The build quality of the lens is very decent and the Silent-Wave drive provides a speedy and silent AF.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

User Opinions

Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX User Reviews

Better than you’d expect from a “kit” lens. | Rating: ★★★★★
“The f/3.5-4.5 is a little faster than your typical f/4-5.6 zooms. So you get slightly faster shutter speeds and better autofocus performance in low light. And the autofocus is fast and accurate, especially for a lens in this price range. The focus ring has a nice smooth damped feeling when focusing manually.” – by Bill

Happy with this Lens | Rating: ★★★★★
“I’m glad to see all the positive reviews for this lens. I got it by default with my D200 and immediately tried to replace it for the 18-200 which everyone raves about. Its been six months now and the urge to upgrade has gone for the most part. I’ve taken this camera/lens on a recent trip to Beijing- wonderful combination. Not too heavy, just right for carrying around and the photos were great. A friend has the D200 with the 18-200 and by comparison it seems awful heavy. That said, I will, at some point, upgrade, but this lens is by no means a second rate piece of equipment.” – by Steve Maloney

Surprisingly Sharp Kit Lens | Rating: ★★★★☆
“I considered other Nikkor lenses reputed to be much sharper at twice the price, decided I didn’t use wide angles often enough to warrant them, and got this lens instead. The resolution is quite good–detailed, crisp prints to 16×20 are possible if your technique is up to it, flare and vignetting are well controlled.” – by Charles Heckel

Better Quality than your everyday Kit Lens | Rating: ★★★★★
“This is a 27mm-105mm equivalent in a 35mm film camera, and I was very surprised by the build quality and materials used. Even more impressive is the photographic quality that is achievable by this lens. It focuses quickly and accurately. It is sharp, with very minimal distortion compared to Sigma’s.” – by kkrome25

First Rate | Rating: ★★★★★
“This lens came with my D70s. When I want to go lite, I carry the d70s and the 18-70. I know that the images I make with this lens will be exceptional. In my collection there are both prime and zoom nikkors. This lens compares favorably, at the focal lengths it covers. An excellent choice.” – by Brad

Great all around lens for under $400 | Rating: ★★★★★
“This lens takes crystal clear photos with great color and depth of field. It’s the lens I use the most and have on my camera for daily ‘snapshot’ use as well as when traveling. The only other lens I have needed is a Nikkor VR zoom lens for shooting sports and wildlife. If you have a Nikon D40 or better, you need this lens! It’s an all around deal at under $400 too.” – by Andrew

Good bang for the buck | Rating: ★★★★☆
“It is versatile, sturdy, and an excellent performer. If you already have the 18-55mm lens, it is probably not worth purchasing; if you have no zoom lens in this range, the Nikon 18-70mm deserves your consideration. In this price range, its real competition is the Nikon 18-135mm, which offers you more range for the same price, but the downside is that you’re down to f/5.6 at 135mm on that lens. “ – by Kyle Lanclos

Well Made and Heftier Than the 18-55! | Rating: ★★★★★
“The 18-70 new style ED IF lens is far and away the heavy duty superior. I ordered one and immediately noticed the differences. The optical quality of the little lens isn’t really bad at all, but the 18-70 is certainly better. The greater reach also helps keep it on the camera most of the time. It’s heftier construction and feel is more steady and sharper.” – by Pat Martini

Excellent budget priced lens by Nikon | Rating: ★★★★★
“I purchased this lens after being unhappy with the kit lens that came with my d80 (18-55mm VR). While that kit lens produced some good pictures, I found the autofocus to be tooo slow for my personal taste. This lens (18-70) has no such problem. It autofocuses quickly, is quiet and the built quality is worlds better than my previous lens.” – by Mohammad Hamidi
