Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Reviews

Lenstip compares the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR to Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G II and writes;
“The new stabilized “kit” is really an interesting device you can get good quality shots with. It did have some faults and minor slip-ups but it is rather unavoidable in this price segment. Every amateur photographer who buys this lens in the set with a reflex camera won’t be forced to look for another one too soon because this device will allow him/her to get satisfying effects.”

Photoreview compares the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR to Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G II and writes;
“Imatest revealed a significant discrepancy between centre and edge resolution at the 18mm focal length but this lessened by 24mm and centre and edge performance remained relatively close at longer focal lengths. Resolution declined sharply at apertures of f/16 and smaller..”

Popphoto compares the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR to Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G II and writes;
“Especially at longer focal lengths, distortion performance is better than that of many pro lenses in its zoom range. It’s also superior to Nikon’s earlier non-VR kit zoom by almost every metric. Whether you’re new to Nikon or looking for an optical upgrade, the $80 extra for VR will be money very well spent.”

SLRGear compares the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR to Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G II and writes;
“Optically it’s alright, maybe even better than alright if you get a good copy, but to get the best results you have to stop down to ƒ/8. Fortunately, the addition of VR does make that possible. In the final analysis it’s a good lens, not a great lens, excellent for the beginning photographer.”

Cameralabs compares the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR to Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G II and writes;
“Ultimately while the older DX 18-55mm II still gives excellent innings, the new DX 18-55mm VR performs very well for the money, offering compelling features and respectable quality that puts many rival kit lenses to shame. It’s certainly a good time right now for Nikon DSLR owners on a budget.”

Kenrockwell reviews the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR and writes;
“Just like the miraculous 18-55mm AF-S II, this little plastic lens is a miracle. It’s sharp, sharp, sharp. Doing direct same-camera, same-subject, same time comparisons, it’s the same as the 16-85mm VR, 18-200mm VR and 18-55mm AF-S- II. I compared at at 18mm and 55mm, both wide open and stopped down. It has strong barrel distortion at the wide end, and no distortion in the middle and at the long end. If you have Photoshop CS2, it is trivial to correct the distortion completely.”

User Opinions

Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR User Reviews

A must-have Lens! | Rating: ★★★★★
“This is the perfect lens for a lot of occasions… I use it on my Nikon D60. It is awesome. The only thing I wish, is that the f-stop was a little lower… It is extremely difficult to almost impossible for me to snap pictures of moving objects. Not a problem though, I am buying the 35mm 1.8 that comes out at the end of the month! “ – by Cedric Davis

Good little lense for the price | Rating: ★★★★☆
“Yes, it isn’t the fastest or sharpest but you get a very decent piece of glass for the money. The VR feature isn’t as useful as on the 55-200 but it still comes very handy under the right circumstances. Be ready to spend a lot more $ for something measurably better.” – by MOTO

Pretty Nice Kit Lens, But SLOOOOW to focus | Rating: ★★★★☆
“I tried out this lens on a Nikon D5000 (with live-view turned off). Compared to a Nikkor 18-70mm non VR, this 18-55mm is very slow to focus. Focusing was often unresponsive to scene changes, slow to focus, and exhibited a bit of hunting in normal light situations. Image quality is slightly improved over the previous 18-55mm non VR lens. But the image quality is not even close to the 18-70mm non VR lens. “ – by Inayat2012 youtube

Nice Little Bundle, Great Camera, | Rating: ★★★★★
“From just shooting pictures in my back yard, the quality is incredible. I love the auto focus feature. SLR cameras have come a long way in 30 years. The onboard editing and filtering features are nice and work well.” – by Sidney L. Vaught

When you need something lightweight and small, | Rating: ★★★★☆
“I recently took this lens out on the streets of Boston at night to take several shots without a flash and no tripod. The lens functioned rather well and the VR was just about perfect. I definitely recommend the VR over the non-VR version of this lens. The little extra cost is worth it. I’ve been amazed at how often I don’t need a tripod with all my VR lenses..” – by Traveler

Maybe the Only Lens You’ll Ever Need | Rating: ★★★★★
“It focuses fast as I can blink, stays locked on and speaking of focus, it focuses ridiculously close. The images are tack sharp, the VR works a treat, so I get great photos in low light situations. And I get virtually no distortion from either end, wide or long. And as an added treat, you can get this lens with its better than excellent optics for less than two hundred dollars..” – by Tiffany Ann

Excellent upgrade from the kit lens | Rating: ★★★★★
“The addition of Vibration Resistance (VR) makes it a terrific upgrade from the standard 18-55mm kit lens. Put simply, with the VR turned on you will obtain a higher percentage of blur-free shots, and this is especially noticeable in low light conditions. I should add that addition of VR does not detract from the already excellent performance specs of the lens that shipped with my D40.” – by Mark G. Loftus

Great Starter Lens for Nikon | Rating: ★★★★★
“I pixel peep once in a while, and have found that this lens produces pictures that are not “razor” sharp. However, at this price range, it is much sharper and offers much more control than a point and shoot, and provides the benefits of an APS-C camera, which is increased resolving power, good colors, and sharper images than a lower level of camera…” – by M. Kaainoa
