Nikon 1 J1 Reviews

Digitalcamerareview reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Shutter lag is minimal, autofocus acquisition times are good and continuous still image shooting rates can be as high as 60 fps (if only for a fraction of a second). High ISO noise performance was surprisingly good considering the diminutive physical size of the sensor.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

Photographyblog reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“the Nikon 1 J1 is a good camera for beginners, it’s not so well-suited to serious amateurs. The J1 is a very small, high-quality, discreet and generally fast camera but its interface is quite clearly not geared toward users who like to take full control of the picture-taking process.”
Rating: ★★★★★

CNET reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“When bought with the dual-lens bundle, the J1 represents excellent value for money. The cheapest prices we could source for its two lenses online were £165 for the 10-30mm and £209 for the 30-110mm unit. Together they account for over half of the £550 average asking price.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Expertreviews reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Noise levels were remarkably low, allaying our worries about the sensor’s relatively small size. At ISO 3200, shadows were scruffy and noise reduction glossed over details but image quality was significantly better than from the Panasonic GF3.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Technobuffalo reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Although the camera is simple on the outside and sticks to the basics on the inside, its top notch performance and stellar image quality more than compensate. The Nikon 1 J1 is better suited for beginners and lady shooters,”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Dcresource reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Photo quality is very good. Not as good as a full size digital SLR, but comparable to what you’ll get from a Micro Four Thirds camera. Exposure was accurate the majority of the time, though the camera did overexpose a bit at times. Colors are vibrant and pleasing to the eye.”

Techradar reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Interestingly, although Nikon tells us that the J1 applies chromatic aberration correction to JPEG images, when we opened some raw files in Capture NX2 we found that they showed less chromatic aberration than their JPEG counterparts. Turning off the software’s chromatic aberration correction brought the two file types closer into line.”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Digitaltrends reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Videos were also superior. The J1 captures 1080/60i MOV files and they looked “camcorder” level on a 50-inch HDTV. You’ll like them, as well as the ability to take a still while shooting video without interrupting movie recording.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

Engadget reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Surprisingly, the camera offers full manual control while shooting video, letting you adjust the aperture, shutter speed — even the ISO sensitivity — before capturing both HD and slow motion videos.”
rating: N/A

PCW reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“The bottom line, as always, is image quality. During the studio session, I alternated between the Nikon J1 and my Nikon D3s DSLR (with a 70-200mm VR II lens). Of course, it’s not fair to compare images between the two–we all know which camera would win–but I did see some shots from the J1 that exhibited the same spot-on exposure and rich, vibrant colors when the lighting was good.”

PCAdvisor reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“We were largely happy with the photos we took; once the camera is switched on, it quickly focuses on a subject and snaps them – useful if you’re photographing those restless children or pets. Colours were deep and detailed such as wood grain, animal fur, and individual leaves came out well. If anything, there was a little too much saturation.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

Pocket-lint reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“In terms of sharpness, the J1 creates crisp images with all the lenses – though the full zoom setting of the 30-110mm lens is a little soft around the edges – while the AF can easily hold its own with the AF on larger DSLRs, even ones from Nikon.”
Rating: ★★★★☆ reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Video image quality is excellent. What is surprising is that the two built-in tiny stereo microphones can provide very decent sound quality.”

Photo-i reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“I love Nikkor lens quality and in this respect the Nikon 1 lenses do not disappoint. Colouring and sharpness are both excellent. The standard lens 10-30mm produced excellent results in a variety of shooting conditions.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Theverge reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“The camera takes about two seconds to turn on, and then shoots with virtually no shutter lag or recycle time — though if you shoot continuously, the camera slows down significantly after about 40 shots. As long as you have excellent light, and don’t run into the slow-shutter-speed problem, the camera is great for action shots.”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Btobey reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Overall I found the image quality from the J1 to be outstanding for such a tiny camera. It matches up to the DSLR level and clearly separates itself from point and shoots. The camera handled well in a variety of situations, from indoors to out. “

Ephotozine reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“Image quality is very good, with great colour, and detail, and while ISO noise is not as impressive as Micro Four Thirds cameras, it is noticeably better than serious compacts, such as the Nikon Coolpix P7100, particularly at higher ISO settings. The price of the J1 is quite reasonable, putting it in the middle of the mirrorless price range, yet the 60fps shooting is a unique feature that is worth paying for.”
Rating: ★★★★½

Trustedreviews reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“As might be expected images are pin-sharp in the centre of the frame, but corner and edge sharpness is pretty impressive too – especially when the lenses are stopped down to their sweet spot of around f/8. There’s no dedicated Macro lens as yet, but close focusing on small objects can yield quite good results.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

Macworld reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“I found that the J1’s images looked best when captured under bright lighting conditions. I shot with three kit lenses and, on average, most shots produced respectable detail. Color rendition was good, with relatively rich and saturated colors.”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Sansmirror reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“It has exceptionally good focusing for a small camera, it produces exceptionally good images for the size of its sensor, it has DSLR-like (and not just any DSLR, but high-end DSLR) lag, frame rate, and buffer performance. It has a ton of video capability including some manual controls that many of its bigger DSLR brothers don’t have.”
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Robgalbraith reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“In brighter light, tracking accuracy approaches but does not match the level of the D7000, which means it’s a few notches down from a pro model like the D3S, but still impressive. It’s freaking awesome if compared to a point-and-shoot.”
rating: N/A

Imaging-resource reviews the Nikon 1 J1 and writes;
“When manually focused, the J1′s lag time was 0.072 second, also very fast. The Nikon J1′s prefocused lag time of 0.074 second is quite fast as well, though some DSLRs and many point & shoots are faster in this regard.”
