Excellent Tripod with lots of versatility
“I got this tripod last week and so far i love it. Very light weight, compact and sturdy. It has many features which i have already found myself using, like the lateral arm and the short column…. In addition, it has a nice strap for carrying, and the latches for the legs are smoother then the less expensive Manfrotto’s I’ve used. Most of the parts are made of Magnesium which is strong but light weight, and the tripod looks cool. If I could change things next time, I think they should make the hook for the strap Metal, not plastic, and they need a quick release option of the converting lateral arm and short column. Overall this is a great tripod and I am very happy with my purchase. “ – By G. Goodman

Impressive
“The stability of this tripod is impressive. I took it on vacation and shot a moth, sunsets and anything else I could find. The best photo of the moth was taken using the legs expanded as close to the ground as possible and the center support, parallel. Stability was great! I came hope with a picture on which the texture of wings could be seen and some awesome sunset images. “ – By Sputterkar

Pretty Good
“…I will probably end up buying a monopod as well for travel as I don’t see it being very practical to haul this one around. All of that said, this is a fine unit that sets up quickly, is sturdy, lighter than aluminum and has the added bonus of a spirit level. I would recommend this unit to others who feel the same way I do about twist to lock tripod legs. “ – By DigitalMan

Best tripod I’ve used so far
“I have been using this tripod for over 2 years now and I am very pleased with it’s performance. Quick and easy to set-up and/or break down, sturdy, can be leveled quickly with the aid of the built in bubble level. Personally I prefer the “lever’s” for locking and unlocking the legs just seem faster to me then the “twist/turn” style. And so far I have never pinched a finger. This has been with me on vacation and many other various places granted it doesn’t see as much use as my monopod (Manfrotto 680 COMPACT MONOPOD – Monopod – needless to say even easier to carry and set-up/break down and can be used in crowded places) but it has been around the block a few times.” – By J. Best tripod I’ve used so far
“I do a lot of coastal nature photography, currently with an Oly E30 200mm (400mm equiv). I also use a Bushnell Elite 80 spotting scope – sometimes both together (~1100mm). I added a Manfrotto 410 geared head I got used, which is ideal for targeting subjects w/long lenses. It’s a slight mismatch with these legs, but works fine. I got the National Geographic version of the tripod at about 30% discount off the street price, a great buy. These legs are stable, stiff, compact, adjustable both short and tall, and quite light.” – By Art

Manfrotto 055MF4 Features & Specifications

Retaining all the features of the 055MF3, the Bogen-Manfrotto 055MF4 is a more compact tripod geared to the traveling photographer. The 055MF4 folds to just a shade over 21 inches yet extends to just under 5.5 feet. Light, simple, strong, and extremely versatile to position, the 055MF4 will comfortably support up to 15 pounds and offers a minimum height of only 4.3 inches for low-angle shooting.

Without compromising on stability or rigidity of the tripod, Manfrotto engineers reduced the weight of the 055MF4 by utilizing carbon fiber legs with quick action lever locks in magnesium and resin. In addition, they incorporated the patented design of the 3021PRO series top spider which offers four leg angle settings, and converts the center column into a lateral arm.

The center column itself is of the latest generation of aluminum and resin materials. The low-angle adapter forms the top section of the center column and is easily detached by simply unscrewing the knob at the bottom of the column. This enables the head to be left mounted on the center column when switching between low-angle and normal shooting positions.

All parts are assembled using a proven pressure clamp technology for greater durability and in-the-field serviceability. To make transportation even easier, the 055MF4 is supplied with a hand padded carrying strap that can also double as a hook to hang weight and increase stability during extreme wind conditions.

Features include:

* Carbon Fiber three-faced tubes for the tripod legs
* Aluminum and nylon polymer center column
* Magnesium die casting for all tripod parts and stainless steel nuts and bolts
* Ergonomic, user friendly features such as quick-action adjustable leg lever locks that instantly secure leg extensions firmly in place with no slippage or rotation
* Push buttons to operate leg angles to offer four degrees of inclination
* Center column with vertical/horizontal positioning
* Built-in low angle adapter

Additional Features:

anti-rotation leg sections
Anti-rotation tubing and leg collars make for a tripod (or monopod) that’s easier and faster to open, position and close. Manfrotto uses several different types of anti-rotation system: on Magfiber and Digi series tripods, the elliptical or three-faceted shape of the concentric tubes means they cannot rotate, while on round-tubed tripods small protrusions down the length of the tube keep sections perfectly aligned

190-055 pro centre column
The patented PRO model has a unique design which allows the centre column to be used horizontally as an extending arm, or vertically (both right-way-up and upside-down). When used horizontally, it can be turned through 360° around the tripod, and is useful for macro work, low angle shooting, extreme balance points and off-centre work. This also makes the tripod a helpful accessory for chair-bound photographers, who can sit beside instead of behind the tripod, therefore much closer to the camera viewfinder.

carbon fibre tubing
Manfrotto’s carbon fibre tubing is popular among outdoor photographers because it’s light in weight and also more rigid and supports heavier loads than aluminum, giving it a double advantage.

q-r flip leg locks
Flip lever leg locks make opening, positioning and closing fast and easy. The tension of the locking mechanism is user-adjustable, and all parts can be easily serviced or replaced.

rapid centre column
”Rapid” centre columns are fast and easy to unlock and adjust. However, a fully extended centre column tends to reduce the rigidity of an otherwise stable tripod, so the centre column should normally be used only for fine tuning height or for extreme situations where the extra reach compensates the slight reduction in rigidity.

reversible column
Reversible centre column allows head and camera to be mounted below the tripod – useful for: low-level shooting (because it keeps the tripod and your equipment out of the mud); working with heavy loads (because weight lowers the tripod’s centre of gravity, making it more stable); and also for use with ‘mirror-image’ view cameras

split centre column
Split centre column allows easy and fast ground-level work

three-faceted column
Three-faceted column

three-faceted leg
Leg sections use three-faceted tubing for greater anti-torsional resistance

independent leg angles
Each of the legs can be set to a different angle of spread for more flexible, versatile positioning and to help keep camera equipment well-balanced over the tripod’s centre of gravity.

magnesium castings
Lightweight magnesium is used for die-cast parts. Magnesium has a density of 1.74g/cm3 as opposed to aluminum’s 2.70g/cm3 – a 35% reduction. Despite its lower weight, magnesium is more rigid than aluminum, and has the same strength per volume.

What’s in the Box:
Included carrying handle makes the tripod more comfortable to transport and stays conveniently and unobtrusively attached during use.
