REVIEWS (last update: 19.10.05)
Mark Goldstein gave 3 out of 5 stars for the Konica Minolta DiMage X1 at PhotographyBlog and wrote:
“The Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 is an undeniably stylish, ultra-compact digital camera that is perfect for anyone looking for a point and shoot model that is easy to use. It’s also well-built and cleverly designed, and the non-extending lens means that it’s a quiet camera. The 8 megapixel images are great for making large prints, but unfortunately this has a rather important drawback. This is the fourth camera that I have reviewed recently that is badly affected by noisy images, and the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 is even worse than the others as it shows considerable noise even at ISO 100. Squeezing 8 megapixels onto such a small CCD sensor inevitably results in noisier images at lower ISO speeds.”
Cliff Smith reviewed the Konica Minolta DiMage X1 at Trusted Reviews and wrote:
“.. image quality is very good. In normal light, colour reproduction, dynamic range and contrast are excellent, and the level of detail available with the huge 8MP images is incredible. Exposure and focusing are very accurate, and I was particularly impressed by the macro performance. Image noise is well within acceptable limits, although it does creep into darker areas at the maximum 200 ISO.
The Dimage X1 is a camera for those who appreciate style and innovation and are prepared to pay a premium to get it, especially if they don’t want to be bothered by a lot of technical details but still want good picture quality. It is compact, very easy on the eye, and the anti-shake system and 8MP CCD ensure good results under most normal circumstances. Problems with low-light focusing may limit its usefulness as a party camera, but other than that it performs very well.”
Steve reviewed the Konica Minolta DiMage X1 at Steve’s Digicams and wrote:
“The image quality of its 8-megapixel Fine images was good, but not great. Outdoors it produced relatively sharp results, with the majority of our sample images being well exposed and showing good color saturation. The white balance and exposure systems did very well in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Noise levels were a little above average for a consumer digicam, and I noticed large amounts present in red subjects.
The AF system did a good job focusing in low light situations, although it would benefit greatly from an AF-assist lamp. When shooting in a very dimly lit room, it will fail more often than not. Its Anti-Shake system really comes in handy, allowing you to capture images at slower than normal shutter speeds. Bottom line - the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 will appeal to many users who are in the market for a stylish and durable digicam that features a high resolution imager. “

PRESS RELEASE
The First ‘X-Series’ Compact Digital Camera Equipped with 8 Megapixels, Anti-Shake Function, and a Luxurious Design that Fits Neatly in Your Palm.
A camera of true expressive power, the DiMAGE X1 employs an 8-megapixel, 1/1.8-type CCD - the highest resolution currently available in compact digital cameras. To take full advantage of this incredible resolution, the X1 integrates a newly designed optical system as well as CxProcess III, Konica Minolta’s top image processing technology that renders images as natural-looking as they appear to your eye.
For the first time ever in the X series, the DiMAGE X1 offers Anti-Shake functioning to help reduce the effects of camera shake, ensuring clear, steady shots of scenes that are otherwise difficult to shoot by hand such as in low light situations or indoors. Unlike the A and Z series, the DiMAGE X1 boasts a newly developed type of Anti-Shake system that complements its folded optics and allows for a more miniaturization. Offering unrivalled stability, this new type of Anti-Shake system can provide the equivalent of up to 3 EV to help compensate for camera shake, and is effective for taking shots in low light conditions and using slow shutter speeds around 1/6th of a second at the wide-angle.
To accommodate the high resolution while keeping the body as slim as possible, the DiMAGE X1’s employs a newly designed “non-protruding” 3x optical zoom lens and delivers a lens focal length of 7.7 to 23.1 mm (equivalent to 37 to 111 mm in 35 mm format) and an aperture range from F3.5 to F3.8. Complementing this exceptional optical system, the X1 offers two ways to take close-ups: Auto Macro Mode*1, which takes macro shots without having to switch the mode, and Super Macro mode, which captures amazing close-ups as near as 5 cm.
On the back, the DiMAGE X1 is equipped with a large, 2.5-inch (6,3cm) LCD monitor that features a Bright LCD backlight function, which lets you adjust the LCD brightness as needed with the simple touch of a button. The LCD monitor also offers enhanced easy cleaning thanks to a protective acrylic covering.
The design features of the DiMAGE X1 present high appeal for users who value not only amazing performance, but also sophisticated design. A sleek, metallic elegance makes the X1 impossible to resist, while smooth round edges fit neatly in your palm, giving you ease of use, familiarity and comfort in hand.
The DiMAGE X1 is available in a variety of coloured finishes. Models in silver resonate a futuristic and sophisticated look with a high-end satin finish that perfectly complements the elegant, tactile nature of the DiMAGE X1. Models available in red and black boast an exclusive, glossy mirror finish that evokes a sense of admiration whenever you see it, almost as if you feel like polishing it.
The DiMAGE X1 is also the first Konica Minolta digital camera to come with a convenient, multifunction cradle, which provides quick and easy connectivity for TVs or computers. It can also be recharged in two ways.
*1 Shortest shooting distance: 10 cm in Wide-angle and 40 cm in Telephoto positions
