Mark Goldstein reviewed the HP Photosmart R817 and wrote:
“The HP Photosmart R817 seems to have everything going for it. Small, compact and very stylish body, lots of innovative features like Adaptive Lighting that really make a difference, full manual controls and a 5x optical zoom lens that sets it apart from the competition. This is a digital camera that I really enjoyed using and which will suit both beginner and more experienced photographer alike. Unfortunately there is one big fly in the ointment, namely noisy images, which spoils an otherwise great package….”
Steve’s Digicams reviewed the HP Photosmart R817 and wrote:
“Image quality was what we have come to expect from HP. When using its 5M *** mode, it produces sharp images with great exposure and color saturation. Its 5x optical zoom lens offers a more versatile range when compared to typical 3x zoom digicams. I did notice an average amount of noise in High/Low contrast areas (especially at higher ISOs), but nothing that will be visible in your average 4×6 to 8×10-inch prints. Like we experienced with past models, the Adaptive Lighting feature is very useful when shooting either indoors or outdoors; when using it, the camera increases the gamma of the image to better enhance the detail of objects in low contrast (shadow) areas. I was a bit surprised that noise levels were considerably lower than what we had seen from its predecessors.”
Jeff Keller reviewed the HP Photosmart R817 and wrote:
“As long as you don’t plan on taking a lot of long exposures, the HP Photosmart R817 is a compact camera that I can definitely recommend. It features a fairly compact metal and plastic body and it’s very solid in the hand. There’s a large 2″ LCD display which “gains up” in low light so your subject is still visible. Instead of the usual 3X lens included with most cameras, the R817 has a 5X lens ranging from 38 - 180 mm.
The R817 is chock full of features for both beginners and enthusiasts. Those just starting out with digital cameras will enjoy the numerous scene modes, easy-to-use menu systems, and in-camera help system. More experienced users will like the manual controls and responsiveness of the camera. The camera has all the major controls including focus, shutter speed, aperture, and white balance. Camera performance is very good, save for a tiny bit of shutter lag at slower shutter speeds. The camera focuses quickly and accurately, even in low light. “
PC World reviewed the HP Photosmart R817 and wrote:
“The R817’s menus are easy to navigate, with settings that you can select and adjust quickly. Alternatively, you can drop into a separate screen that presents the options with plenty of help information. The separate Help menu provides basic descriptions of the camera’s functions, plus a “Top Ten Tips” list for new owners who are itching to snap some shots right away. From the Playback menu, you can request image advice on shots already taken. This menu explains which features and modes might be useful for improving focus, exposure, depth of field, and so on. I took a couple of intentionally bad shots and the advice I received was pretty good. HP supplies several functions for editing your shots, including simple but effective in-camera red eye reduction. “
