Samsung GX-1L DSLR - Preview @ DigitalCameraInfo

Patrick Singleton had his hands on the first Samsung’s DSLR which released on 23.02.06. The Samsung GX-1L DSLR featuring 6.10 megapixel CCD sensor, interchangeale lens (Pentax K-mount), 5-point phase detection with selectable spot AF, and a 2.5″ LCD screen display.

“We think the GX-1L is a respectable entry level option. We say that mainly because it seems to be a Pentax, which is a good thing for a few reasons. First, it shares Pentax’s durable construction, simple interface and other positive qualities. Second, it shares the Pentax lens mount, so it’s compatible with a large selection of Pentax system lenses and accessories. Third, Pentax has sent other emphatic signals that they are in the digital camera business for the long haul—and whether or not Samsung produces more DSLRs won’t really matter to the GX-1L owner, because Pentax will prove an upgrade path of fully compatible equipment.”

“Holding the Samsung GX-1S in my hands feels both secure and comfortable. The camera is light weight (about 505 g) and its dimensions (125×92.5×67 mm) are small enough to bring the camera with you all the time. The front of the Samsung GX-1S features the standard Pentax K lens mount with AF coupling. On the lower right side of the lens a lock button unlocks the lens from the mount. The self-timer LED can be found in the grip, while the Focus mode switch is located on the opposite side. The top of the camera features the pop-up flash compartment, external flash hot-shoe and a rather small status LCD panel. “

samsung-digimax-i50

“The good: Comes with a complete set of accessories and extra battery; MP3 playback capability. The bad: Limited manual options; lackluster camera performance; no optical viewfinder; average image quality; no optical image stabilization.

The bottom line: The Digimax i50 performs average at best, but it’s a good option if you don’t want to carry an additional device for music playback–just don’t expect too much on image and music quality.”

Here are the pros and cons:

“What I liked: Wide-angle, 4.8X zoom lens for very little cash, Large 2.5″ LCD display (though see issues below), Well built plastic body; metal tripod mount a nice touch, Very nice movie mode, USB 2.0 High Speed support

What I didn’t care for: So-so photo quality, Poor showing in redeye and night shot tests, Noticeable shutter lag, slow focusing, Poor low light focusing, despite AF-assist lamp, LCD not usable in low light; screen didn’t seem terribly sharp either, Sluggish continuous shooting mode; LCD blacks out during shooting, Unusual menu system could use some refinement, No Mac software included”
