Samsung GX-1S DSLR - Review @ PopPhoto

Popular Photography Magazine has recently posted a review of the Samsung GX-1S DSLR, a 6.1 Megapixel (CCD sensor) Pentax mount Digital SLR camera featuring a large 2.5 inch LCD screen, high speed 2.8 fps up to 8 frames in JPEG mode CCD sensor.

“Autofocusing speed is slower than that of other cameras in this class, notably the Nikon D50 and Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, but the AF has good sensitivity, able to autofocus down to a very dim EV 0… As far as introductions go, Samsung could’ve done far worse than the GX-1S, with its nice handling, pleasing picture quality, and compatibility with scads of existing lenses. But it’s also an aging platform whose resolution trails that of the rest of the league. And in the hot DSLR category, “good enough” is rarely good enough.”

Samsung Digimax S500 - Review @ CNET

CNET have recently published a review of the Samsung Digimax S500, a 5.1 megapixel (CCD sensor) point-and-shoot digital camera with 3x optical zoom (equivalent to 35 - 105 mm) and 2.4″ LCD Screen. They rate the camera 5.2 out of 10 (average) and write;

“Even at ISO 50 (the lowest setting possible with this camera), some noise was visible in our test images, though it was very minor and remained so at ISO 100. At ISO 200, noise was very noticeable, causing even moderately dark colors to become mottled with splotches of varying lightness and colors, though many finer details were still unobscured. By ISO 400, the noise overwhelmed lots of detail, resulting in images unfit for print.”

Samsung Digimax L60 - Review @ CNET

CNET have recently published a review of the Samsung Digimax L60, a a 6.0 megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera with 3x optical zoom (35 - 105mm equivalent) and a 2.4″ LCD display. They rate the camera 7.0 (good) and write;

“The Digimax L60 produced some very nice images, even at higher ISO settings. Colors were neutral, and fine details were visible. We noticed heavy purple fringing along contrasting edges, but that was the only major fault we could find with the camera’s images. Shots were nearly noise-free at lower ISO levels and developed an unobtrusive, fine grain at ISO 400.”

“This simple design makes the camera very easy for beginners to learn and use, but its feature set provides all of the options a beginning to intermediate photographer would want. It includes a full assortment of Priority and Manual modes, as well as auto bracketing, drive modes, adjustable ISOs (from 100 to 1,600 in 1-stop increments), three metering modes, and raw format.”

Samsung GX-1S DSLR - Review @ DCRP

DCRP’s Jeff Keller has recently posted his review of the Samsung GX-1S DSLR, a 6.1 Megapixel (CCD sensor) Pentax mount Digital SLR camera featuring a large 2.5 inch LCD screen, high speed 2.8 fps up to 8 frames in JPEG mode CCD sensor.

samsung_gx1s.jpg

“Overall, the Digimax GX-1S’ photo quality was excellent, and what you’d expect from a D-SLR. Photos were well exposed, colors were very saturated (again, shooting in RAW reduces this), and subjects have a very clean, smooth look to them. Images are a bit sharper than on some D-SLRs, probably to keep the average consumer happy. Noise levels were low through ISO 400 and reasonable at ISO 800. Purple fringing wasn’t a problem, at least with the two lenses I used. “

Samsung GX-1S DSLR - Review @ ePhotozine

Ephotozine have recently posted a review of the Samsung GX-1S DSLR, a 6.1 Megapixel (CCD sensor) Pentax mount Digital SLR camera featuring a large 2.5 inch LCD screen, high speed 2.8 fps up to 8 frames in JPEG mode CCD sensor.

samsung_gx1s.jpg

Noise levels at ISO200 and ISO400 are low, as you would expect from an APS-C digital SLR of this level. Shots taken at ISO800 display a little more noise, but the images are still very usable. At ISO1600 chroma noise starts to become more prevalent, with midtone areas gaining a fairly strong pattern of multi-coloured speckles. By ISO3200 things start to get messy. The grey area of our QP card has no grey left in it, instead large flecks of red, green and blue are dominant. However if pictures taken at the ISO setting are converted to black & white, then they still display a good amount of detail and the noise levels are better controlled.

Samsung GX-1S DSLR - Review @ Digitalcamerainfo

DigitalCameraInfo’s Patric Singleton has recently posted his review of the Samsung GX-1S DSLR, a 6.1 Megapixel (CCD sensor) Pentax mount Digital SLR camera featuring a large 2.5 inch LCD screen, high speed 2.8 fps up to 8 frames in JPEG mode CCD sensor.

samsung_gx1s.jpg

“The GX-1S delivered very good noise performance in manual mode as well. When the image mode is set to “Natural,” rather than “Bright,” the GX-1S surpasses the performance of the similar Pentax *ist DL. The two cameras’ noise curves are very similar. Notably, the GX-1S’s noise level increases gradually at higher ISOs – there isn’t a single point at which the GX-1S suddenly deteriorates precipitously. “

In conclusion, he writes;

“Likes: Solid Construction, Large, high-resolution LCD, Good Usability, Mirror lock connected to self-timer, Excellent user manual, Compact body, Nice color reproduction, Handles noise well at lower ISOs, Very easy to use
Dislikes: Poor resolution performance, Unreliable meter – often underexposed, Poor autofocus, Grip is uncomfortable for some users, Kit lens has small maximum aperture”
