Nikon D50 Tutorial by KenRockwell

Ken Rockwell has written a simple tutorial on how he uses and sets up his Nikon D50, a 6.1 effective megapixel Nikon DSLR camera with DX Format CCD sensor, a large 2.0-inch LCD inch screen, a refined 5-area auto focus system, continuous 2.5 frames per second frame-rate, and Nikon’s 3D Color Matrix Metering II.

“ISO: I use 200. If the light gets dim and my images would get blurry from slower shutter speeds I increase the ISO to 400, 800 or 1,600. I never bother with in-between settings like 250 or 640. The D50 looks fine at ISO 1,600 if you need it. I’d much rather have a slightly grainy but sharp image than a less grainy but blurry one. Unlike film, the D50 looks great at high ISOs, so I use them anytime I need them.”

Nikon D200 - Review @ Shutterbug

Shutterbug’s George Schaub has posted a review of the Nikon D200, a Digital SLR camera with a 10.2 megapixel CCD sensor, 5 frames per second with bursts up to 37 JPEGs (Fine-Large) or 22 NEF (RAW) images and a large 2.5″ LCD screen.

Nikon D200

Pros: Superb lens, with manual focus ring and mechanical zoom feature, Ultrahigh 10-megapixel resolution, gorgeous colors, snappy contrast, superlative image quality at ISO 160-400 with or without flash, Better than average digital noise control at ISO 800 and 1600 for a prosumer digicam, Includes the most important features for serious photography

Cons: Some exposure and White Balance problems in low light, but can be solved with overrides, Long shutter speed NR system is too aggressive; avoid using this feature when possible, In camera sharpening algorithm does not produce ideal results in large prints, Can shoot only three JPEGs in a sequence; in raw capture, no Continuous advance and slow data recording due to (uncompressed) 20MB file size”

Nikon Coolpix S5 - Review @ DigitalCameraReview

DigitalCameraReview has recently posted a review of Nikon CoolPix S5, a a 6.0 megapixels (CCD sensor) with 3x Optical Zoom lens (38-116mm equivalent), a 2.5″ LCD screen.

nikon-coolpix-s5

“Auto ISO images are generally excellent with sharp resolution, bold colors, and lots of snap (although some very minor pattern noise is occasionally visible in shadow areas). ISO 50 and 100 images are consistently excellent with very good detail and virtually no noise. ISO 200 images are surprisingly good, essentially the same as lower ISO images. Noise levels rise noticeably at ISO 400 - images are a bit flat and some fine detail is lost (Noise comes through as an overall soft graininess sort of reminiscent of high speed film). I did see some blotching (chroma noise) in a couple of ISO 400 images.”

Nikon Coolpix P4 - Review @ TrustedReviews

TrustedReview’s Cliff Smith has recently posted a review of the Nikon Coolpix P4, an 8.1 megapixels (CCD sensor) with 3.5x optical zoom lens, a 2.5″ LCD screen, and a built-in Vibration Reduction (VR).

nikon-coolpix-p4

“In the Coolpix P4 Nikon has produced an excellent all-rounder, a pocket compact camera with a wider than average zoom range, a useful selection of features and options, and superb image quality. It is rather expensive compared to its immediate competition, but the extra money buys the quality and reliability that go with the Nikon brand. If you are looking for something a little more than the average snapshot camera it is well worth a look.”

Nikon Coolpix P4 - Review @ PhotographyBlog

PhotographyBlog’s Mark Goldstein has recently posted a review of the Nikon Coolpix P4, an 8.1 megapixels (CCD sensor) with 3.5x optical zoom lens, a 2.5″ LCD screen, and a built-in Vibration Reduction (VR).

nikon-coolpix-p4

“…The Nikon Coolpix P4 produced images of very good quality during the review period. The 8 megapixel images were a little soft straight out of the camera at the default sharpening setting and ideally require some further sharpening in an application like Adobe Photoshop. Alternatively you can change the in-camera setting to one of four levels to suit your taste. The Nikon Coolpix P4 dealt very well with chromatic aberrations, with limited purple fringing appearing only in high contrast situations and at the edge of the frame. Macro performance is above average, allowing you to focus as close as 4cms away from the subject. The built-in flash worked well indoors, with no red-eye and good overall exposure. The night photograph was a weak point, with the maximum shutter speed of 8 seconds in the Night Landscape scene mode not being that versatile. “

Nikon Coolpix P4 - Review @ Steve’sDigicams

Steve’sDigicams has recently posted a review of the Nikon Coolpix P4, an 8.1 megapixels (CCD sensor) with 3.5x optical zoom lens, a 2.5″ LCD screen, and a built-in Vibration Reduction (VR).

nikon-coolpix-p4

“…the P4 offers additional in-camera sharpness settings of High, Normal, Low and Off. The white balance and exposure system did well under various lighting conditions, producing images with accurate color reproduction and good saturation…
Bottom line - Nikon’s Coolpix P4 is a capable compact digicam that produces good quality 8-megapixel images and VGA sized movies. Beginners will enjoy its fully automatic and scene assist modes, while intermediate users will be able to get creative with Aperture priority and the range of adjustments available in Programmed auto mode.”

Nikon Coolpix L4 - Review @ Steve’sDigicams

Steve’sDigicams has recently posted its review of the Nikon Coolpix L4, a point-and-shoot digital camera (released on 21.02.06), featuring a 4 megapixels (CCD sensor) with 3x Optical Zoom lens (38-116mm equivalent), and a 2.0″ LCD screen.

nikon-coolpix-l4

“The overall image quality of its 4-megapixel High quality mode was very good. Our outdoor samples were sharp, well exposed and had pleasing color saturation. The exposure system did a great job of capturing sky detail, although whites were sometimes blown-out in bright sunlight. Like the other members of Nikon’s L-series, ISO sensitivity is fully automatic; there’s no manual adjustment available. I saw very little noise when the camera was using a lower ISO setting, but as with most consumer models, these levels will become more noticeable as the sensitivity is increased. The lens exhibited noticeable barrel distortion at full wide angle, but essentially no pincushioning at the telephoto end. Chromatic aberration, also known as “purple fringing”, was very well controlled, with only very slight amounts present around highlights or brightly lit subjects.”

Nikon Coolpix S5 - Review @ Steve’sDigicams

Steve’sDigicams has recently posted a review of the Nikon CoolPix S5, a a 6.0 megapixels (CCD sensor) with 3x Optical Zoom lens (38-116mm equivalent), a 2.5″ LCD screen.

nikon-coolpix-s5

“The Coolpix S5 has a lot of appeal to those wanting ease of use and good image quality in a very small stylish package. It offers several unique features that distinguish it from the competition, including D-lighting, Red Eye Fix and Best Shot Selector. But it suffers from low flash output and sometimes selects a low shutter speed that results in images blurred by camera shake. “

Nikon Coolpix S6 - Review @ Steve’sDigicams

Steve’sDigicams has recently published a review of the Nikon Coolpix S6, a 6.0 megapixels (CCD sensor) point-and-shoot digital camera (released on 21.02.06) with 3x Optical Zoom lens (38-116mm equivalent), a huge 3.0″ LCD screen, and a Built-in WiFi. In conclusion Steve writes;

nikon-coolpix-s6

“I was pleased with the overall image quality when using 6-Megapixel Fine mode. Outdoor images showed good overall exposure, with colors being nicely saturated. Noise levels were very low at sensitivity settings of ISO 50 and 100. Shadow noise is present at ISO 200, and noise is noticeable throughout the image at ISO 400, although those images are quite usable.”

Nikon Coolpix L2 - Review @ DigitalCameraReview

Megapixel have recently posted a review of the Nikon Coolpix L2, a 6.0 megapixels (CCD sensor) point-and-shoot digital camera (released on 21.02.06) with 3.5x optical zoom lens (36-126mm equivalent) and a 2.0″ LCD screen. In conclusion they write;

nikon-coolpix-l2

“I was impressed with the image quality. Colors were accurate and skin tones looked good and weren’t too warm or reddish….

If you’re in the market for a simple to use, affordable camera, the Nikon Coolpix L2 is an excellent option (as are its siblings, the Coolpix L3 and Coolpix L4). The ease of use of this camera is hard to beat and it produces consistently good images. Most entry-level users will also be pleased with the Nikon Exclusive Feature System - the Face Priority AF makes focusing a portrait a no brainer and the D-Lighting will correct the lighting on shots to provide pleasing results. “
