ShootSmarter University has completed its first DSLR Shootout test to discover which DSLRs have the best and worst skin tone reproduction as determined by shootsmarter members. After 71 scorecards were tallied, here’s the result:

dslr-best-skintone

“As you can see, the popular 5D was the winner and really produced a terrific looking file that printed perfectly, and to our amazement the pricey 1Ds II was the lowest scoring skintone of the set.”

Nikon D200 - Review @ TrustedReviews

TrustedReviews have posted a review of the Nikon D200, a Digital SLR camera with a 10.2 megapixel CCD sensor, 5 frames per second with bursts up to 37 JPEGs (Fine-Large) or 22 NEF (RAW) images and a large 2.5″ LCD screen. They rate the camera 8 out of 10 and write;

Nikon D200

“As to the crucial question of how it compares to the new Sony Alpha, which uses the same Sony-made 10.2MP APS CCD, it’s tricky one. The Sony is certainly a lot more accessible for the less experienced user, and is of course a lot cheaper and considerably lighter. The D200 however has the edge on build quality, performance and robust durability. As for image quality, I’m still waiting for the Sony RAW processing software, so a conclusive analysis will have to wait, but for camera-processed JPEG images I’d have to give it to the Sony Alpha for sharpness, dynamic range, colour reproduction and image noise control.”

Nikon Coolpix S5 - Review @ ImagingResource

ImagingResource has recently posted a review of the Nikon CoolPix S5, a a 6.0 megapixels (CCD sensor) with 3x Optical Zoom lens (38-116mm equivalent), a 2.5″ LCD screen.

nikon-coolpix-s5

“One of the reasons I’ve never been particularly fond of slim cameras is that I couldn’t figure out the best place to put my fingers. The Nikon S5 has partially solved that problem by having the grip-end of the camera be slightly curved inward thanks to the wave design. Nikon has also placed a wedge-shaped thumb-grip in the right-hand corner of the rear of the camera which helps to stabilize it. “

Nikon Coolpix P4 - Review @ DPInterface

DPInterface has a new review of the Nikon Coolpix P3, a a 8.1 megapixels (CCD sensor) point and shoot digital camera with 3.5x optical zoom lens (36-126mm equivalent), a 2.5″ LCD screen, Vibration Reduction (VR), and a Built-in WiFi.

nikon-coolpix-p3

“ISO 50 is fairly clean while noise goes up a bit at ISO 100. ISO 200 noise is still acceptable. The final ISO 400 shot is also clean as well. No chromatic aberration (color fringing) to be seen either. Barrel distortion is not very noticeable while pincushion distortion is not. Colors accuracy was on par and there was some red-eye. Default settings used by the camera should be enough to satisfy most, with saturation and sharpening turned up. The Nikon Coolpix P3 produces very good photos whose quality are the same as the P4. I still see room for an ISO 800 option here though.”

Nikon Coolpix S6 - Review @ DigicamReview

DigicamReview have recently published a review of the Nikon Coolpix S6, a 6.0 megapixels (CCD sensor) point-and-shoot digital camera (released on 21.02.06) with 3x Optical Zoom lens (38-116mm equivalent), a huge 3.0″ LCD screen, and a Built-in WiFi. In conclusion Steve writes;

nikon-coolpix-s6

“Image quality is hit and miss with this camera, it can produce some excellent colours, and very good macro photos, with low noise at ISO 50, however, outside on bright sunny days, when you would expect the camera to be performing it’s best, it sometimes seems to be performing it’s worst, with noticable vignetting in corners, generally soft images, soft corners, and soft sides down the left and the right. The camera also disappoints when it comes to the huge amount of red-eye in photos - this is the worst I’ve seen for a very long time, and the built in red-eye reduction doesn’t seem to do anything to fix it.”

Nikon Coolpix S6 - Review @ DCRP

DCRP’s Jeff Keller has recently published a review of the Nikon Coolpix S6, a 6.0 megapixels (CCD sensor) point-and-shoot digital camera (released on 21.02.06) with 3x Optical Zoom lens (38-116mm equivalent), a huge 3.0″ LCD screen, and a Built-in WiFi. In conclusion Steve writes;

nikon-coolpix-s6

“Camera performance is a mixed bag. The S6 starts up quickly and focusing times were reasonable. Despite having an AF-assist lamp, I found the camera’s low light focusing abilities to be poor. There’s also a bit of shutter lag when shutter speeds get slower. Shot-to-shot speeds were reasonable, as was the S6’s continuous shooting mode. Battery life was about average for a camera in this class. ”
