CNET Asia’s Kevin Wu Li has posted a review on Casio Exilim EX-Z850, an 8.1 megapixels (CCD sensor) point-and-shoot digital camera featuring 3x Optical Zoom lens (35 – 210mm equivalent) with anti-shake technology, and a 2.5″LCD screen. He gives the camera 6.8 out of 10 (good) and writes;

“Our images produced nice saturated colors which we liked but some of our pictures exhibited blown-out highlights which caused us to lose some details. In ambient surroundings, the camera produced decent captures in Night mode. However, with flash, there was an unnatural brightness in some of our images. The objects in the center of the picture tended to be brighter than the surroundings.

The anti-shake feature had its limitations when it came to moving subjects or shaky hands. Proper photo-taking techniques still had to be observed. Noise wasn’t an issue and was reasonably contained even at the maximum sensitivity level of ISO 400.”

Casio has announced the release of their latest firmware updates for Casio EX-S600 and Casio EX-Z500. The new firmware update software Version 1.01 will add Keystone Correction to both Casio EX-S600 and Casio EX-Z500 digital cameras.

Keystone Correction

Correct the snapshot of a blackboard, document, poster, photograph, or other rectangular object that is out of square because it was recorded at an angle.
Performing keystone correction on an image causes a new (corrected) version (1600 × 1200 pixels) to be stored as a separate file

Casio Exilim EX-Z120, a 7.2 megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera with anti-shake DSP, 3x optical zoom, and a 2.0″ LCD screen, has been reviewed at Megapixel. Here’s their verdict on image quality

“Image quality is good to very good, the images have very good colour, with good saturation, contrast and detail – although images are slightly soft, and could do with sharpening, either in camera or afterwards. The camera did a good job focusing – although the camera occasionally struggled in low-light, the majority of the time focusing in low-light was successful. I did not notice vignetting in photos, nor did I notice barrel or pincushion distortion. There is a good range of image sizes, and a good choice of compression options. The macro mode is average, although it does provides good detail and colour. Auto white balance and metering seemed to be very good the majority of the time. Red-eye was a problem in some of the photos, however purple fringing was very low. The movie mode choices are good, providing 640×480 and 30 frames per second with sound. Noise was slightly high at the higher settings, but at the lower settings wasn’t a problem. The camera’s “Anti-shake” mode using ISO800 and ISO1600 may be useful if you don’t want to take flash photos, and if you intend to print at a small size, although it isn’t as successful as real anti-shake such as optical image stabilisation or anti-shake sensor, nor is the high ISO mode as successful as the “

“The camera’s images were also prone to noise, especially with the ISO setting at its maximum of 400. Areas of flat color had an almost bumpy appearance from the noise in the images. The EX-S600 includes an antishake mode, but it doesn’t involve optical stabilization. Instead, it works by boosting the sensitivity of the camera to light, though at a cost–pictures taken in this mode are prone to the same noise problems as the ones taken at high ISO settings. A huge selection of other shooting modes is available, however; you get 34 in all, including an interesting mode that is designed to boost the colors of old photos. Rather than using a scanner for color correction, you take a picture of the old photo and the camera performs the task.”

“It’s a great camera. It’s tiny, easy to use and can make great photos. Of course photo quality has more to do with the photographer than the camera, and if you’re a decent photographer you’ll have no problem making vivid and sharp 12 x 18″ prints and bigger. As you should read in more detail in my earlier reviews of Casio Cameras, they have the best ergonomics of any compact digital camera. This is why I bought a larger EX-Z750 for my own use last year.

..The S600 is the sharpest of the Casios I’ve used. It seems to have more sharpening as its default than my other Casios. It also has a better lens which is very sharp everywhere except the very farthest corners. “

“The colours the camera captures are true to life and pleasantly saturated, without any particular colour dominance. Like other recent Casio cameras, the EX-Z120 offers a myriad of colour filters to produce creative effects with the images.

Noise, on the other hand, can become noticeable at higher ISO settings and even at lower settings when the ambient light is poor, while when photos are captured with plenty of light, noise is imperceptible.”

James Murray has posted his a preview on Casio Exilim EX-Z600, a 6.0 Megapixel point-and-shoot digital camera with 3x optical zoom plus the Anti Shake DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and a huge 2.7″ TFT LCD Screen.

“The Casio EX-Z600 puts forth some impressive features that separate it from the fairly clogged 6 MP digital camera market. Its impressively large 2.7-inch LCD is bright, even if equipped with less than stellar resolution. The menu structure is intuitive and has live views for manual modes throughout. The areas where Casio really stands out in comparison to other digital cameras in its price range involve specific image alteration features, like motion print, movie editing, still image editing with rotation, resize, trim, and copy while still in-camera, and the 33 preset modes which could come in handy for many users who ride the fence between auto and manual control settings.

The only major detractor for this camera is the placement of ports on the accessory dock. Moving these ports to a dock allows ever smaller camera sizes but necessitates knowing where the printer dock is at all times, unless users have an SD card reader.”
