Canon PowerShot SD550 - Review @ Imaging Resource

Imaging Resource have recently posted their review on Canon PowerShot SD 550 Digital ELPH, an excellent 7.1 megapixels camera with 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2.5 inch LCD monitor. In conclusion they wrote:

powershot-sd550

“Pro: Vibrant, appealing color, Good skin tones, Auto white balance handles a wide range of lighting well, Better than average exposure accuracy, Good lens, generally low distortion (some chromatic aberration at wide settings though), Excellent shutter response at wide angle settings
Excellent camera styling, very compact, Very simple user interface, Accurate LCD viewfinder
Good low light capability (But only in Night mode), Case design fits both large and small hands well Cons: Only white balance and EV compensation options in Manual mode, Only average speed from shot to shot , A little slow to clear the buffer memory, and very slow shot to shot after buffer fills (five large/fine shots), Only average shutter response at telephoto focal lengths, Contrast is a little high, tends to lose highlight and shadow detail under harsh lighting, Battery life is rather short with the LCD enabled, Some users may find the highly saturated color unnatural”

Canon EOS 5D with Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS Sample Photos

Francesco has just posted his personal test of Canon EOS 5d with Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM and commented:

“It is certainly a fantastic lens. Unfortunately too heavy, big and intrusively obvious to be used as a walkaround lens. Great for sport / high movement and certainly for portraits in available light. I found the fall-off (vignette) at 70-100mm a little bit too much but looks overall nice in the pictures.”

Canon EOS 5D Infrared Conversion Instruction

Lifepixel has written an instruction for those who just bought this $3000 camera, and have a gut to remove the hot mirror assembly inside the camera.

By removing the hot mirror, the camera acts pretty much typical. Fast shutters, regular exposures, etc. It eliminates the need to tripod mount and do multi-second exposures, like is necessary with a filter setup.

Basically this is what you have to do:

First you need to lift out your brand new $3000 camera’s LCD. If you still don’t have it, you can buy it here for $3,299.99

Canon EOS 5D VS Nikon D2x

George N. Nyman published a personal comparison with samples of Canon EOS 5D with Nikon D2x and wrote:

“The Canon 5D is a very attractive camera but still, the contrast rendition is not really close to perfect as the overall image contrast is pretty high. There are subprograms which allow for a slightly smoother contrast with less steep curves - and this helps a bit, but still, I do see in critically illuminated scenes too much contrast in the digital shots.

The color rendition on the other hand is very brilliant - the 5D is a color-friendly camera, the images are very pleasing but sometimes maybe a bit too colorful - this can be adjusted as well, but using the standard shooting modes, for my liking. the colors are a tiny bit too colorful.
Something else which I think I should mention is the fact that for my liking the images of the 5D are a bit too soft - they need considerably more sharpening to be crispy than the ones coming out of the Nikon D2X. At very first glance, one could think that the resolution is slightly limited, but no, all the details are existent, they are just very soft and this creates this initial feeling that the images are a tiny bit out of focus - but they are not. When you compare the raw images (in their initial factory default settings) of both cameras, of the 5D and the D2X, you immediately see the difference between them - Nikon’s default raw image is crispier and a bit less colorful whereas Canon’s default raw image is more colorful and a bit less crispy.”
