Canon DPP VS Adobe Lightroom
Oat Vaiyaboon has done some tests comparing the Canon Digital Photo Professional, a free RAW Processing software comes with Canon DSLR cameras to Adobe Lightroom. He concludes;
“As you can see in this picture, LR works a lot better with jpg to bring out the colour while keeping all the detail that otherwise blown out to bits in the clouds and sandpit. Again, because DPP only have 3 sliders VS LR which has 10millions slider to keep you busy for the next few years. BUT When it comes to RAW processiong, DPP give you more natural loooking colour with less fringing, noise, colour information, details, etc then LR or PS raw converter for that matter. RAWs - Canon’s Digital Photo Professional wins; JPGs - Adobe’s Lightroom wins”

GIMP Vs Photoshop
Grimthing has an article comparing GIMP, a free open source image editor program to the famous Adobe Photoshop. And the winner is….

“The winner for commercial printing – Photoshop. The winner for home use – The Gimp. Bet you saw that coming, didn’t you. The truth is, they’re both winners when they’re used in the proper context. The Gimp just doesn’t have support in the areas that are necessary to make it useful in a commercial application. However, you cannot justify the price of Photoshop for personal use when the Gimp will do everything it can do outside of commercial printing. I know I’ve beat the horse to death, but unless you want to pirate software, there is no reason to use Photoshop if you’re not producing a print publication – use the Gimp.”

Vista Can Cause Problems to Your Photo Metadata
News.com has reported that Microsoft Windows Vista can cause problems to your photo metadata.

“The problem will occur when you edit the properties of a photo to add metadata to that photo in Windows Vista, the software for the digital camera may no longer recognize the metadata that is automatically added to the photo by the digital camera. Microsoft also has received reports of compatibility issues with Nikon NEF files after installing version 1.0 of Nikon’s raw codec posted in January. Tagging the raw files through Windows Vista or the Microsoft Photo Info tool after the codec is installed appears to cause these files to become unreadable in other applications, such as Adobe Photoshop.”

Epson Stylus 1400 Photo Printer Latest Price
“The good: High-quality color photo printing; long-lived prints; CD- and DVD-label printing; many paper options. The bad: Black-and-white prints not perfectly neutral; large footprint; no card reader. The bottom line: Epson’s new dye-based 13-inch printer has style and prints large photos, but its black-and-white prints are less than perfect.”
