Nikon has announced the latest update of its Capture NZ software. The Nikon Capture NX version 1.1 offers several new improvements including increased performance, full support for Intel-based Mac OS X computers, and optimization for Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system. Grimthing has an article comparing GIMP, a free open source image editor program to the famous Adobe Photoshop. And the winner is….

“The winner for commercial printing – Photoshop. The winner for home use – The Gimp. Bet you saw that coming, didn’t you. The truth is, they’re both winners when they’re used in the proper context. The Gimp just doesn’t have support in the areas that are necessary to make it useful in a commercial application. However, you cannot justify the price of Photoshop for personal use when the Gimp will do everything it can do outside of commercial printing. I know I’ve beat the horse to death, but unless you want to pirate software, there is no reason to use Photoshop if you’re not producing a print publication – use the Gimp.”

News.com has reported that Microsoft Windows Vista can cause problems to your photo metadata.

“The problem will occur when you edit the properties of a photo to add metadata to that photo in Windows Vista, the software for the digital camera may no longer recognize the metadata that is automatically added to the photo by the digital camera. Microsoft also has received reports of compatibility issues with Nikon NEF files after installing version 1.0 of Nikon’s raw codec posted in January. Tagging the raw files through Windows Vista or the Microsoft Photo Info tool after the codec is installed appears to cause these files to become unreadable in other applications, such as Adobe Photoshop.”
