Canon SX230 HS Reviews

DCR reviews the Canon SX230 HS and writes;
“The image quality of the SX230 is very good, and by far one of its best selling points….So is this camera worth the upgrade if you already have the SX210 IS? Maybe. If you want a camera and are stuck between the two, spend the extra fifty bucks more and get the SX230 HS, you get more bang for you buck and you won’t be disappointed with the images you capture or video you record.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Photographyblog reviews the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and writes;
“Image quality is slightly improved on the previous SX210, that is to say excellent. The employment of a back-illuminated sensor helps the SX230 to perfrom well in low light, with a usable ISO range of 100-800 and even the higher settings proving adequate for web use and smaller prints. “
Rating: ★★★★½

Cameralabs reviews the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and writes;
“the SX230 HS offers an excellent range of shooting modes, great video features, a lot of fun unique stuff like Creative filters and smart shutter features, and the best quality images of any pocket super-zoom in its class. If you can live with the fact that it lacks the super wide angle view and fast shooting modes of its competitors, then it has a lot going for it.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

CNET reviews the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and writes;
“Color performance is a strong point with the SX230 HS. Everything turns out bright, well-saturated, and reasonably accurate. Exposure is generally good, though it really struggles with highlights, blowing them out every chance it gets. White balance is fairly accurate, too, but Auto goes warm indoors. You’re better off selecting the appropriate preset for your lighting or using a custom setting.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Techradar reviews the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and writes;
“Excellent image quality with a good level of sharpness and detail overall, as well as excellent stereo sound quality when shooting Full HD movies. The array of exposure modes on offer is excellent, as is the focal length range offered by the 14x optical zoom lens.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Trustedreviews reviews the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and writes;
“Edge sharpness and resolution of fine detail are both very impressive, with the SX230 delivering above average results on both counts. At lower sensitivities, where image noise is completely absent detail is especially impressive – easily good enough to print at A3 size with no discernible loss in quality.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Imaging-resource reviews the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and writes;
“The Canon PowerShot SX230 HS captures a lot of fine detail with strong definition at ISOs 100, 200 and even 400, though details are a hint soft here. Even results at ISO 800 are better than expected.”
rating: N/A

Digitalcamerainfo reviews the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and writes;
“The controls are all clearly labeled and have unique shapes and feels to them, while the in-camera menu system itself is legible and easy to get around. The camera also uses Canon’s typical “function menu” which, with a single key press, brings up a whole menu of typical shooting options that the user can scroll through on the edge of the screen.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

PCMAG reviews the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and writes;
“With impressive image quality, good speed, a high-powered zoom lens, and a GPS module, the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS is easy to recommend.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

PCWorld reviews the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS and writes;
“Canon consistently makes some of the best-performing point-and-shoot cameras in our tests, and the PowerShot SX230 HS is no exception. Its image quality puts it among the top tier of 2011′s pocket-megazoom class, and the camera can be as easy to use or as manual-oriented as you want it to be.”

Looks to be a winner for vacation pictures
“It’s not that much bigger than an S95, though it’s significantly larger than some of the new Elphs. However, I don’t need a featherweight camera. The SX230 fits in most pants pockets or in a belt case.. 1080p video with optical zoom. S95 has 720p with digital zoom only. Most people won’t need a dedicated camcorder if they get this camera.” – By bevorules77

Love my travelcam
“The main reason I wanted this camera is I wanted a big zoom in a compact camera and I wanted great image quality. I love the zoom. I love the portable size. And I have found the image quality to be a big boost over my previous digital cameras, especially in low-light.. I would definitely recommend this camera to others.” – By scrapmaniac

Picky photographer loves this camera
“Great low light capability. By that I mean it takes great shots in a dimly lit room. Great wide angle of 28mm. Fantastic for a camera this size and weight. Perfect zoom length of 14x. Image stabilizer works great! Excellent color. Great features all around – and I haven’t even played with it nearly enough to find all the bells and whistles. Fits in your pocket. Good flash. Quick all around.” – By Lit Critter

A Great Camera All Around
“Photo quality is excellent. With all of the different shooting modes, it is very easy to take great shots. Colors are accurate. Indoor shots have turned out great, often times without need of a flash. The camera has a CMOS sensor, touted to allow better low-light shots and it seems to work brilliantly. Outdoor shots have been excellent as well. ” – By B. Sullivan
Rating: ★★★★★

Exceptional Performance
“The low light performance is really impressive; I can only imagine the S95 would be even better with a full F-stop wider lens. However, I have to say that the long lens on this SX230HS has really been more useful on multiple occasions. It’s just fun to be able to get closer in certain conditions like on the paintball field or shooting details on buildings..” – By hkwan

Decent Point N Shoot
“The SX230HS is a definite improvement: It does have higher sensitivity, higher resolution and a wider zoom range. The images are reasonably noise free up to an ISO of about 400. The flash range is short, but decent for group shots up to about 10 or 11 feet away. Auto focus is fast and accurate.” – By Lotus-Seven
Rating: ★★★★☆

Nice camera but somewhat flawed
“The 12MP SX230 HS seems to retain about the same level of detail as the 14MP SX210 IS in low light conditions at ISO 800. I also own the SX210 IS. The SX230 seems to be slightly more light sensitive but seems to have more agressive noise reduction than the SX210.” – By Mr Todd

Excellent camera
“I find the sx 230 weighs about seven ounces compared to the about 14 ounces of the G12. The G12 is very sharp but the sx 230hs is almost equally sharp indoors and outdoors. The zoom control on the sx230 is far smoother than the one on the G12. Photos seem perfectly exposed, in sunshine and in rain, and in artificial light.” – By E. Dowd

First Canon with GPS
“Overall, I’m very happy the photo quality and manual features offered (control over exposure level, aperture setting, flash level, etc.) Having a single button to shoot video is great.. GPS feature generally works well, photo locations show fine in Apple Aperture” – By Jeff Wright

Avant garde performer, low light champion
“Low light support: This is the most talked about feature, and this was be one of ‘THE reasons’ I chose this camera and it really worth a pat on back for this . The results are really amazing for a point and shoot category camera.” – By NJ’s dad

Canon SX230 HS Features

Experience the Power.
Canon’s HS SYSTEM with a 12.1 Megapixel CMOS and DIGIC 4 Image Processor improves shooting in low-light situations without the need for a flash and lowers noise levels at higher ISO settings.

The Canon HS SYSTEM takes the frustration out of low light shooting. The system delivers clear, blur-free shots with all the ambiance intact, and frees you from the sometimes unwanted effects of using the flash. Beautiful low light shots are possible at both low and high ISO speeds, and the dynamic range is expanded to retain maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas.

The system is the result of two technologies brought together in a compact PowerShot. The first is the 12.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, which positions the light-receiving surface for optimal light reception. More light means clearer, blur-free images with plenty of detail and nuance, even in dark areas. Working together with the CMOS sensor to deliver the HS SYSTEM is Canon’s advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor, which actively reduces noise and delivers high speed image processing.

Superb image quality. Any doubt about it.
Superb and natural color.
Superb definition.

but…

1920x1080p video is simply … well… bad; very bad.
The Panasonic Lumix TZ10 1280×720 video is better.
And, yes the image quality is really amazing. Color, definition, sharp as a razor blade but… terrific NOISY.

Tree days with this camera. Very impressed with all the features. But, also very sad for the noise even at ISO100.

My humble and honest opinion.
