Canon PowerShot G16 is a new Point and Shot camera that announced on 21 August’13 for replacing the previous model PowerShot G15. The G16 is identical to G15. It just adds new features such as WiFi Connectivity and the new DIGIC 6 Image Processing Engine that promises better high ISO sensitivity performance up to 12800. Canon claims that the PowerShot G16 has better performance than previous model by use the new processor that provides continuous shooting rate of 9.3 fps for over 500 shots. This camera will be available on the market from October 2013.

Features & Design
When compared with the previous model, the Canon PowerShot G16 has features and design that is not much different from the G15. The camera is only added new features such as processor Digic 6, Autofocus is faster by up to 41 percent, and WiFi connectivity. The processor of this camera lets you shoot in low light situations with superior quality in a faster speed than the previous model. You can also shoot continuously over 9.3 frames per second.

In addition, the Canon PowerShot G16 has a design that is slightly smaller than the G15. The camera body is made of sturdy aluminum and is equipped with a wide range of manual control buttons including a two level dial controls, specifically the movie, the programmable control ring, and the rear dial shortcut keys. Not only that, the G16 also has a regular accurate viewfinder with a size 3.0-inch although it is not touch screen types. By looking at features and design, the G16 is expected to satisfy serious photographers who want to have a back-up camera.
Performance & Image Quality
Like the Canon PowerShot S120 which was announced at the same time, the G16 is equipped with a 12.1-megapixel 1.1.7 CMOS image sensor with ISO sensitivity up to 12800. In addition, it also has the same lens as the G15 is a 5x optical zoom lens with aperture of f/1.8 to f/2.8 and a wide-angle maximum of 28mm. Autofocus camera has been improved by up to 41 percent allows you to shoot up to 12.3 frames per second. The combination of the ability of the image sensor and processor ensures this camera is capable of producing superior image quality in low-light shooting situations.
You can also record Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) video with full resolution at 24 frames per second but can also be set at 60 frames per second or 30 frames per second. The sound of video is also supported by a microphone in the camera. There is a shooting features that you can use when taking photos or videos to enhance the quality of images produced such as the Star Mode that offers several types including Nightscape Star, Star Trails, and Star Time-lapse Movie options.
Many people said that the Canon PowerShot G16 is not much different from the previous model Canon PowerShot G15. But with equipped with WiFi connectivity, users will more easily transfer their files to social networking media or compatible device. This camera will be available in the market in October 2013 at a price of U.S. $ 550.
Should I buy the camera?
Taking into consideration of the new features that offered by Canon PowerShot G16 like the new image processor DIGIC 6, WiFi connectivity, and continuous shooting up to 9.3fps. This camera is worth buying if you want a back-up camera for your DSLR. In addition, the design and control are also quite compact although not different from the G15. As consideration you may need to look at the competitors of this camera such as the Canon PowerShot G1X, Fujifilm X20, Nikon Coolpix P7700, and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100.
