REVIEWS (last update: 19.10.05)

Jeff Keller reviewed the Canon PowerShot A410 at DCRP and wrote:

“Camera performance is very good for a $150 camera. The A410 is ready to shoot in a little over a second, with good focusing speeds (even in low light), minimal shutter lag, and short shot-to-shot and playback delays. The A410 has a very impressive continuous shooting mode as well — you can keep taking pictures at 2.3 frames/second until the memory card is full, assuming that you’re using a high speed SD card. Battery life is excellent as well, especially with high power NiMH rechargeables installed.

Photo quality on the A410 was very good. Images were well exposed with low noise and purple fringing and accurate color. Redeye was a bit of a problem, but not as bad as I was expecting. More less redeye the camera supports an external slave flash that attaches via the tripod mount. If you take a lot of long exposures the A410 isn’t for you, as the slow shutter speed available is just one second. Same thing goes for movie mode lovers: movies are limited to 3 minutes of silent, choppy video.”

Steve reviewed the Canon PowerShot A410 at Steve’s Digicams and wrote:

“Image quality was excellent. There are a variety of image sizes to choose from as well as the quality. The most common setting is either the default Large Fine mode or Large SuperFine, which we used. Both will produce pleasing prints up to 8×10-inches. Overall our outdoor sample photos looked awesome, showing good color saturation and exposure. I saw very little compression noise in areas of contrast, however there were traces of Chromatic Aberration present around highlights. The 3.2x optical zoom lens produced sharp results throughout its 41-131mm equivalent range, with noticeable barrel distortion at wide angle. Canon’s AFiF autofocus system is accurate and fast even when shooting Super Macros at 0.6 - 2 inches or in total darkness thanks to its focus-assist lamp. Flash range was typical for this type of model, illuminating your subject up to about 10 feet away (ISO Auto at Wide angle.) We captured the best individual portraits from about four or five feet away. Overall they showed good flash exposure, with natural skin tones. The A410 also records video at resolutions of either 640×480 or 320×240 without audio. Our movie samples were sharp and showed very little compression artifacts, however the slower frame rate of its VGA mode (10 fps) makes movies look a little choppy.”
