I got the Canon 17-85 with IS and love it. Use it almost exclusively and don't have to change lenses all the time like I did with my film SLR.

Hi Deen,
on lenses it really depends on how much money you want to invest for it.
On my photoblog i have some photos with the standart kit lense 18-55 mm. Since a view months I use mostly a 55-250mm lense which i really like. I think for beginners this lense has the best price performance ratio and both lenses have a good quality.
So i suggest to you to try the kit lenses and afterwards you can think about a new, more expensive one.

Am planning to get this camera sometime soon and it would be my very first DSLR. Could anyone please tell me what would be the best alternative lens to go with it? Been reading very positive reviews about the camera but the same can't be said about the standard kit lens. Thank you.

I'm still not comfortable with the switch to SD cards, but the buttons and menus are looking nicer. The big LCD screen looks great also. The Rebel series has been nothing but incremental improvements, but it's come a long way since the 300D.
