Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Reviews

Photoreview.com.au reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and writes;
“There was a significant difference in handling between the two cameras. On the EOS 5D, the EF 70-200mm felt comfortable and well-balanced and proved generally very satisfying to use. On the much lighter EOS 300D, it felt distinctly out-of-balance and it was difficult to aim and shoot with the camera with any degree of comfort. For this reason – as well as the test results below – we would not recommend using this lens on a lightweight SLR.”

Kenrockwell.com reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and writes;
“This is a high quality, fast focusing tele zoom. Get it if you want a budget price for a super quality optic and can survive without IS or f/2.8. This is an ideal lens for daytime sports because you don’t need IS (Image Stabilization) or the f/2.8 speed of Canon’s other 70-200mm lenses, and this one retains the super-fast focusing and excellent image quality you do need.”

Slrlensreview.com reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and writes;
“Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM is one of Canon’s most affordable L-quality lenses and I continue to claim that is easily one of the best values you can get dollar for dollar. Image quality, build quality and overall feel of the lens are very solid.”

Photozone.de reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and writes;
“The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L is a very harmonic package combining exceptional build quality with an excellent and very even optical performance throughout the range.. or to be precise: what it can offer. Unfortunately the quality of the two tested samples varied quite a bit which is a little disappointing especially regarding the L designation. So if you can get a good one the EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L can be highly recommended! “

Photodo.com reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and writes;
“At almost a third of the price of the big brother lens, comparisons are a little unfair. This smaller, lighter, slower version is a very nice lens for the money and produces excellent results. Being that much smaller and lighter, it makes a good companion for some of the smaller cameras in Canon’s line up such as the 20D and the 350D without the price and weight penalty of the top end lens.”

The-digital-picture.com reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and writes;
“Images from the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens have great color and bokeh (foreground/background blur quality). The 8-blade aperture opens to a constant f/4 at all focal length ranges. This is a very nice feature as exposure settings do not require a change as the lens is zoomed through the focal lengths…You will likely need a flash when shooting indoors after the sun sets. “

SLRGear.com reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and writes;
“On a sub-frame camera like our 20D testbed, the Canon 70-200mm f/4L delivers outstanding performance across its full focal length range, and at all apertures from wide open up to about f/16 or so. Wide open, it’s sharp from corner to corner from 70-135mm, showing only a little softness in the corners at 200mm. Chromatic aberration is impressively low at all focal lengths”

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM User Reviews

No Surprise – Best Lens for the Money | Rating: ★★★★★
“I really like this lens for is portrait work at the wide end – dynamic portrait shots with motion where the 7D auto focus system and USM of the lens nails focus in an instant and the sharpness, contrast and color of the image is about as good as it gets with an APS-C. The light weight of the lens makes it a pleasure to carry around. The only negative I can think of is not having weather sealing, which is only on the IS models. Looking forward to adding a 1.4x TC for sporting/nature shots. “ – by P. VANDALEN

Amazing, | Rating: ★★★★★
“I am stunned the quality and clarity (Sharpness of the pictures, I am pleased beyond words. WOW!! What a great lens, a MUST Have! Has taken my bird photo’s to a new level. Using it on a Canon t1i. “ – by Mike Mckinney “Mike McKinney”

Perfect image quality | Rating: ★★★★★
“this lens has superb image quality, silent and accurate autofocus (thanks to USM ring) and perfect bulid quality. After taking pictures, when you check in your computer in full size, you will see all the patterns even you cannot see with your naked eye. However, the downside of this lens is lack of IS. If you will take some nature pictures during daylight, it is OK but in low light conditions, you need a flash or an IS. Moreover, it is a pretty good portrait lens. When you compare the price with what it delivers to you, it is definitely one of the best Canon L lenses in the market. “ – by Arda Mizrak

What an Awesome Lens!, | Rating: ★★★★★
“I just love it! For the money, I really do not think it can be beat! I have been shooting my 40D with the 17-85 kit lens for ~6mths and was starting to get a little concerned about the “sharpness” of a lot of my shots and I really wanted a medium zoom. After zooming all the way to review my very first shot with this lens, I was very impressed…my 2yr old ~8ft away with my 580EXII flash, ~30th sec shutter, very fast focus and very sharp (tack sharp) pic. The lens just does everything right, you never have to wonder if it is going to focus well or give you a tack sharp photo…highly recommend to you! “ – by Paul J. Mcclure “PJM”

Amazing lens at a fair price, | Rating: ★★★★★
“The USM AF motor gives silent and quick focusing, pretty much a necessity for action photography or wildlife where every millisecond is one which could have had the perfect shot. My lens is tack sharp at f/4, but it does gain a bit of sharpness when stopped down to 5.6 specifically at the edges of the pictures. The sharpness on this lens will impress, thrill, and maybe even hook you into saving up for more L lenses as well. . They call that “L fever” and this lens might just give that to you. I’d definitely recommend this lens for anyone who wants an extremely sharp, fairly long tele zoom at a very affordable price(for an L). “ – by Mike H

very sharp | Rating: ★★★★★
“This lens is very sharp. Excellent upgrade to my 55-250mm. No regrets buying the non-IS version. I couldn’t justify the IS version for double the price.” – by C. Umeda

A Genuine Value | Rating: ★★★★★
“This lens is one of Canon’s best values. It is very sharp, even sharper than my 24-105mm Canon EOS L lens. A lot of bang for the buck!” – by Wilfredo Benitez

Quality optics! | Rating: ★★★★★
“This is an entry-level “L” white lens, but its optics are quite sharp even wide-open. It is definitely sharper than the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras and has similar optics to the much more expensive and heavier Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras.. The main difference? No image stabilizer and it is slower than it’s f/2.8 brother. But if you are going to use a monopod/tripod or have good lighting to get some faster shutter speeds in, don’t hesitate to buy this lens. “ – by Don Sausa “www.InvestingWithoutLosing.com”

Features & Specifications

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Specifications

Capture the far-off action of fast-paced sports or zoom in for an intimate portrait with the Canon EF 70-200mm telephoto zoom lens. This high-performance, L-series telephoto zoom lens is distinguished by such features as an f/4 maximum aperture, an inner focusing system, and a ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM). The last two features combine to deliver quick and quiet autofocusing–a priority for many amateur and professional photographers. In addition, photographers can attach and use a circular polarizing filter without difficulty because the front lens element does not rotate during focusing. Compatible with the same tripod collar (sold separately) used with the EF 300mm f/4L USM lens, the lens carries a one-year warranty.
