Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Review

the-digital-picture.com review the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM and write -

“The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens is arguably Canon’s best value “L” Lens.
You get professional quality with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens. This is a solidly-built lens in a popular and useful focal length range. The 70-200 f/4′s optical quality is excellent.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens is relatively light. Actually it is very light and small compared to the much more substantial Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L Lens or the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS Lens.
“.

“Results from the 70-200 f4 make you smile when reviewing at 100% on screen. This lens is very sharp wide open. There is little noticeable sharpness improvement when stopped down. “

In conclusion, they write – “If you cannot afford a Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L Lens or a Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS Lens, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens is for you. If you do not need your 70-200mm lens faster to be faster than f/4 and don’t need IS, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens is your lens. “

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Reviews

camera.canon.com.my review the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM and write -“The zooming action is smooth and quick. With the EOS-3 set on Program AE mode and 21 -zone Evaluative metering, I was able to shoot a scene at the lens’ 70mm setting and zoomed immediately to the 135mm position for the next shot.”

Peter Kun Frary – http://emedia.leeward.hawaii.edu reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM and write –

“Unlike most AF lenses, the manual focus ring is large, ribbed, rubberized and nearly as smooth turning as the manual lenses of yesteryear. The focusing ring feels too far out on the barrel. “

In conclusion, Peter still favours the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM by saying –

“However, if you need a telezoom, this is among the best for film bodies. The EF70-200 4L USM has similar build and optical quality as the famous EF70-200 2.8L USM, but at half the price, weight and shy a F stop. Most pros buy the EF70-200 2.8L USM as the extra stop may mean the difference between getting an important shot (paycheck) or not. For discriminating hikers, travelers and amateurs this zoom deliverers quality without breaking their shoulder (and bank) and can take the knocks they dish out.”

Bob Atkins – bobatkins.com comparing this lens with Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 by writing –

“The advantage of the 70-200/4L over the 70-200/2.8L (IS) is that it is smaller, lighter and significantly cheaper (less than 1/2 to 1/3 the cost). Optical quality is, however, at least as good (some suggest it’s better but the difference, if any, is small). The f4 version isn’t available with image stabilization though, so the f2.8 lens not only has an intrinsic 1 stop speed advantage, but the IS gives an additional 2-3 stops of “hand holdability”, so despite it’s larger size and weight (and cost!), if you’re handholding the lens in low light, the Canon EF 70-200/2.8L IS USM gives you at least 3, maybe 4 stops advantage as far as camera shake is concerned.”
