Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Reviews

Wlcastleman.com Compares the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM to Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM and writes;
“For most photographic applications, either 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is an outstanding tool that produces exceptional image quality. Deciding whether to buy the IS lens or the non-IS lens should probably revolve around the photographer’s perceived need to have image stabilization. Image stabilization does come at the cost of higher purhase price and slight loss of image sharpness.”

Whatdigitalcamera.com reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and writes;
“Optical testing returned excellent results for the 70mm and 135mm focal-length settings with the standard short rise in MTF at wide apertures followed by a gradual tail-off later. Peak resolution, from f/5.6 to f/8, was very impressive at around 0.37 cycles-per-pixel. It is a shame that there was a drop in performance recorded at 200mm but, even so, the MTF results remain good overall.”

Electronicsme.com reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and writes;
“With superior performance, comes superior price tags and that holds true with this lens being in the high end of Canons L series lens. Aperture and focal length performance are of extremely high quality and the internal focus system adds ease of use to the rest of the impressive features the Canon EF 70-200mm possesses. If you are prepared for the price tag, or need the top of the line lens for your gadget bag, this is the pick of the pack.”

Bobatkins.com reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and writes;
“you get excellent optical performance and a very effective Image Stabilization system. With the addition of the Canon 1.4x and 2x TCs you get very usable 98-280/4 and 140-400/5.6 lenses with full AF operation on all Canon EOS bodies… If you can afford it, the EF 70-200/2.8L IS USM is certainly the best and most capable of the Canon 70-200 lenses.”

The-digital-picture.com reviews the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and writes;
“The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens is not an inexpensive lens, but it is very worth the price in my opinion. I considered this my second most important lens with the first being a more general purpose lens in focal length range. My keeper rate from this lens is among the best of any lenses I have used.”

Excellent lens! | Rating: ★★★★★
“The images produced by this lens on my 7D are excellent! I highly recommend this lens. Know however that this lens is heavy and that using it for long periods will produce arm fatigue. Other than the weight I highly recommend this lens.” – by G. Morris

You gotta get this lens!! | Rating: ★★★★★
“I’ve been saving up for this lens for awhile now and been wanting it ever since I got my DSLR. It’s expensive, but worth every cent after you shoot with it. There’s nothing like seeing your pictures have that extra pop and the nice background bokeh when you use the lens at full zoom. I shoot with both a canon XT and a 40D and with both the pictures pop. I can’t imagine what it would look like with a full frame 5D Mk2! If you want to have the full experience of photography – this lens is a must along with 2 other lens 16-35L and 24-70L. Can’t afford it? Save up!!! It’s worth it!!” – by H. Peng “joonggook”

Nice lens but… | Rating: ★★★☆☆
“This is actually a very nice lens but considering how much better the 70-200 F4 IS is, it’s hard to like this beast. The size and weight difference between these two lenses is enormous. I also was not happy with it’s performance wide open (especially at 200mm) so I would generally be using f4 to get the sharpness I demanded. Because I shot it at f4 so much there was no need to be lugging it around. I sold it for the f4 IS and now I get even better results and my shoulder is thanking me. “ – by Expose

Impressive. | Rating: ★★★★★
“I have been into photography for quite a few years now and I really havent gottin into lots of pictures with the lense so far but the few test photo’s I did get are quite impressive! The autofocus is really nice but if you want to pick out a certain thing you want to zoom in on it easily can switch to manual focus to get the specific thing you want to take at long range. I highly recommend this item. I take a lot of wildlife pictures and this lense does the job. “ – by Randall R. Racine “randy”

Greate Lens! | Rating: ★★★★★
“It is a really great lens. When I take photos, I adjust which distance to be focused and exactly the objects at this distance become an image and all the more distant become a background. And I can chose which to be the image and which to be background. Grate photos of flying birds today! it is really expensive but no doubt I am glad that I chose it.” – by S. Kipor

perfect magic wand for amateur photobugs | Rating: ★★★★★
“as an newbie, this lense got me a new found faith on my canon 50d. it was never easier to frame great pro-looking shots. even without filters, my shots are so perfect can’t believe i took em. picture quality is superb especially in short to medium range. i bought this lense together with a canon 2x adapter and it seems like i’ve got everything i needed to shoot anything. cost is just about right considering the make of the lense itself and it’s hidden tricks. my only catch is the weight. bit hard for small wrist to aim and maintain composition when taking a shot. great lens !” – by Michelle A. Incredibly sharp, even wide open | Rating: ★★★★★
“I’ve found this lens to be fast focusing and razor sharp, even wide open. It’s my favorite lens for photographing wading and diving birds. I often work from a moving boat so I usually bump the shutter speed up to a 1000th of a second. On my Canon 7d set to shutter priority, that means that in the shadows the lens is often wide open at f2.8. Even so, I’ve been thrilled with the sharpness and bokeh. “ – by Stan Burkes

Legendary Canon Glass Gets “Updated” (reposted review) | Rating: ★★★★★
“I have shot indoor and outdoor shots both hand held and with my Bogen automatic mono-pod with this lens. In both cases the results have been nothing short of amazing. Clear sharp images almost every time with magnificent color and superb brokeh (blur quality). The image stabilization is first rate and runs hard and strong. Don’t be fooled into saving money buying the other versions of this lens. If you ever expect to be free from using a flash and get great results in reasonable natural lighting, this is the lens to buy. If you can’t afford to buy this lens then save up for it. If you compromise you may be sorry later. “ – by thetoolman

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Specifications

Incorporating Canon’s second-generation Image Stabilization technology, this 70-200mm telephoto zoom responds in as little as 0.5 seconds while providing up to three stops of correction for camera shake. As a result, you can easily capture the far-off action of fast-paced sports or zoom in for an intimate portrait with a blurred background. The lens’s autofocus (AF) system, meanwhile, has been refined for better response time and tracking speed. And photographers will love the new eight-blade circular aperture, which offers a more pleasing out-of-focus image. Constructed to pro standards, the EF 70-200mm lens is highly dust- and moisture-resistant and carries a one-year warranty.
