Expert Reviews

Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM Reviews reviews the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM and writes;
“With the image stabilizer engaged, you can pretty much stick the lens on any old tripod and get excellent results down to 1/125th of a second.. Using ISO 400 negative film further increased my image yield to the point where I scarcely lost any frames (out of 18 rolls) to camera shake.”

Juzaphoto reviews the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM and writes;
“The Canon 600 f/4 is heavy and bulky, but it offers exceptional reach and first rate image quality, and it is one of the most desired lens by bird and wildlife photographers. It is fully usable even with teleconvertes, that give an excellent 840mm f/5.6 and a good 1200mm f/8. It has fast autofocus and a very effective and useful image stabilization; the built quality is first rate, as you can expect.”
rating: N/A

The-digital-picture reviews the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM and writes;
“Although it is for the long focal length that many people buy the Canon EF 600mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens, its image quality is excellent as well. The 600 IS has very decent sharpness wide open (including wide open full frame corners) and improves some until stopped down 1 f-stop or so. CA (Chromatic Aberration) is very well controlled. Distortion is also negligible. “

Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM User Reviews

excellent! | Rating: ★★★★★
“Ultra low dispersion glass and fluorite elements create high definition images with excellent contrast. Fast f/4 maximum aperture allows high shutter speeds in less than ideal lighting and facilitates the use of teleconverters. Optical image stabilization designed specifically for this lens operates in two user selected modes. Dust and moisture resistant construction make it ideal for the outdoors..” – by lemmy shoyu

Wow! | Rating: ★★★★★
“Increditable images. Forget the 600mm’s, the images from this lens are very impressive, better than my other two Canon L lens – the f/2.8, 28-70mm zoom and the f/4, 300mm…” – by RM

Impressive, depending on your copy | Rating: ★★★★☆
“Using live view at 10x, the visible shake of 840mm (600mm + 1.4x TC) is evident, even when the lens appears to be steady. Yet with IS, the results can be impressively sharp.” – by BirdPhotographer

Big Guns! | Rating: ★★★★★
“This is a great lens for bringing things up close and personal. Has image stabilizer that works great. Bit on the heavy side. Recommend it as worth the expense and weight.” – by Longhorn

Worth the Weight! | Rating: ★★★★★
“The improvement in image quality is stark. Bokeh is superb. The f4 combined with the IS allows me to get images that were out of reach with the other lens. And the extra 100mm in focal length – especially when combined with Canon’s matched 1.4X extender really fills the frame with whatever it is you’re shooting..” – by Charlie MacPherson

Features & Specifications

Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM Specifications

An outstanding professional lens for bridging distances in sports, wildlife, and many other applications–including commercial and fashion for the distinct “compressed” telephoto character and totally out-of-focus backgrounds its images can possess. Fluorite and UDglass are combined for incredible image quality, even wide-open. Image Stabilization adds a new dimension in this long lens’ usefulness, even in marginal lighting. It works beautifully with both 1.4x II and 2x II extenders, and now focuses as close as 17.5 feet/5.4 m. It has the same weather-resistant gaskets and sealed focusing and focus pre-set rings as Canon’s other Image Stabilized super-telephoto lenses.

See a Different Dimension
A super telephoto lens can make an ordinary scene into an extraordinary one. Its ability to see surpasses that of the human eye. It can compress images and make them look as if they come from another dimension. It opens up new realms of photographic expression. All EF super telephoto lenses are L-series lenses to provide the highest quality. The USM provides quiet and high-speed autofocusing. These lenses promise outstanding delineation and put your imagination to the test.

Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS USM Super Telephoto Lens Features

Also, the minimum focusing distance was reduced to 18 ft. (5.5m). Extender EF 2x II can be attached to increase the focal length to 1200mm while retaining AF (at the center focusing point with the EOS-1v and EOS-3).
