Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Reviews
Lenstip reviews the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM and writes;
“The Canon 55-200, especially in the 55 mm to 100 mm focal lengths, corrects coma very well at the edges of the frame. This is a result of the very small differences in MTF50 value measurements in the center and at the edges of the frame.”

Whatdigitalcamera reviews the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM and writes;
“The lens displays reasonable sharpness which, if not the best, is certainly consistent. Apertures up until f/11 maintain similar degrees of sharpness, with a rapid drop in sharpness at f/16 and f/22.”

Photodo reviews the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM and writes;
“As with most zoom lenses in this class, the better performance is achieved at the shorter end of the zoom range with a steady degradation as the focal length increases. This lens, however, manages to control this phenomenon fairly well, especially in the centre of the optic with more falloff noticeable toward the edge of the frame..”

Photozone reviews the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM and writes;
“Vignetting is very well controlled with the lens – not really a surprise for a full format lens used on an APS-C DSLR. At 55mm @ f/4.5 vignetting is sightly more pronounced but usually not field relevant. At other aperture settings or longer focal lengths vignetting is negligible.”

Ephotozine reviews the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM and writes;
“Chromatic aberration is well controlled and at no point does it give rise for concern although the contrast of this lens is a little short of Canon’s normally high standards. Distortion is reasonably well controlled, with figures of 0.72% barrel at the short end varying to 0.88% pincushion at the longer focal length.”

The-digital-picture reviews the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM and writes;
“Sharpness is one of the disappointments with the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Lens. Reasonable sharpness requires at least f/5.6 or f/8 at all focal lengths..”

Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM User Reviews
Good for the price | Rating:

“Given that the Rebel effectively makes all lenses more telephoto (multiply by 1.6 for 35mm equivalent), and that I like to shoot in the range near 55mm, this lens seemed like a better idea than the more readily available 75-300mm lenses.. For the price, though, it’s excellent, and should hold me for the years it’ll take to save up for L-series glass.” – by Simon St.Laurent

Get what you pay for… in a good way | Rating:

“It performs very well for sporting events, especially in the day. Nighttime sports are a cinch to shoot as long as the field/stadium lights are above average. “ – by J. Mannion
good job | Rating:

“An all around good product, this lens does exactly what it intends to do. Nothing amazing, but doesn’t disappoint if you’re looking for a standard medium zoom lens. Relatively light-weight, and quick and easy to put on.” – by K. Cook

Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Specifications
The Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM is compact, lightweight and is compatible with all EOS cameras and ideal for digital SLR’s. When used on the EOS Digital Rebel, it’s equivalent to an approx. 90-320mm lens. The 13-element design’s new optical coatings are optimized for digital cameras. It focuses down to under 4 feet (1.2m), and its Micro USM-powered AF is faster than ever, due to new electronics within the lens.
Features
* Compact and lightweight telephoto zoom lens
* High-speed Auto-focus
* Optimised lens coatings
* Lead-free glass optical system
A compact, redesigned telephoto zoom lens for both digital and analog EOS SLR photography.
Like all EF lenses, the EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM works with all Canon EOS cameras. When mounted on a digital SLR with APS-C size sensor, its effective focal length provides the equivalent of 88-320mm in 35mm format. It’s an excellent additional lens to the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 – the standard lens for the EOS 300D.
Superb technology and ergonomics
The EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM is compact and lightweight, with 13 lens elements in 13 groups resulting in consistent image sharpness. It incorporates Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) technology and improved electronic circuitry to provide high-speed Auto-focus. Externally, the lens has an ergonomic rubber pattern zoom ring that’s easy to grip, while its black body and distinctive markings match the design of the latest EOS cameras.
High-speed Auto-focus
The EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM’s fast Auto-focus is the result of an improved AF drive pattern, a new type of Central Processing Unit (CPU) for faster communication, and a new AF algorithm.
Optimised lens coatings
The EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM’s lens coatings have been optimised to minimise ghosting and flare – something that’s more prone to occur with digital cameras than film cameras. The coatings reduce reflections off the rear of the lens to deliver crisp, undistorted digital images.
Lead-free glass optical system
Only environment-friendly lead-free glass is used in the construction of the EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 II USM.
Accessories
A lens hood (ET-54) and lens case (LP1016) are available as optional accessories.
