Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Reviews

The-digital-picture reviews the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM and writes;
“When image quality counts, the 24-70 L II is the clear winner. It is sharper/has better contrast at f/2.8 than the 24-105 has at f/4 and continues to win all like-aperture comparisons until DLA becomes apparent at f/11. The II has less distortion, significantly less CA and, until stopped down a couple of stops, less vignetting. The 24-105 L is significantly less expensive and has a longer focal length range.”

Digphoto reviews the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM and writes;
“Not only is the updated 24-70mm II lighter and more compact, it improves on the first version across the board. Besides stunning sharpness, the lens provides better autofocus, nicer bokeh and a warmer image all around. Unlike its predecessor, the 24-70mm II utilizes 82mm filters and has a different focal length at 70mm.”

Photoreview reviews the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM and writes;
“Vignetting was very well controlled and only just visible at the widest aperture settings. Stopping down only one f-stop made it disappear. Distortion was also very low for the lens’s focal length range, with only slight barrel distortion visible at 24mm and nothing significant thereafter.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Kenrockwell reviews the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM and writes;
“24-70mm f/2.8 lenses are favorites of most professional wedding and event photographers because of their great sharpness, high speed and optimum range for general people photos while walking the grounds and the room. It goes as wide as you’d ever dare for group shots without distorting faces,”
rating: N/A

Super High Quality Lens
“It is very sharp and then f/2.8 is exactly what I was missing to have a little more flexibility indoors. Performs much better in low light because of this and is a step up from my 24-105 f/4 IS. I think both lenses have a job so I will keep the 24-105, but this 24-70 is my new walk around lens. I calibrated the lens first. It was ever so slightly back focused at 70mm. Microadjustment on my 5D made short work of that and now it is in good sharp shape.” – By MartyF81

Tack sharp
“After several years of use of the prior iteration of this lens, I’ve now had about a month of use with the II. This lens is beautifully sharp – absolutely no question as to it being an improvement of what was already a wonderful lens.. I’ve been using this with a full frame (5D III) and this is definitely my standard lens that I walk around with now.” – By Dr. Stuart Gitlow

Sharpest zoom lens made
“I previously owned Canon’s 28-70 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8 version I and the 24-105, and all were excellent lenses. At nearly double the price of the 24-105, the 24-70 II has to really excel to be a better choice, and it does. It is the sharpest zoom lens I have ever used. Pricey to be sure but prime lens quality or better. Colors, contrast and clarity are stunning. Slightly smaller and lighter than version I. Fast autofocus.” – By George

Looking good
“AF performance – on the 5D Mk III it locks focus quickly. It SEEMS like it’s faster than the original, but I don’t have that on hand for a direct comparison.” – By H. Lapo
