Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM Reviews

Techradar reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“The Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM lens is a pancake lens, so it is quite short and it looks very neat mounted on the new EOS 650D. With a maximum aperture of f/2.8 it is also quite a fast optic, and it’s capable of producing images and videos with fairly shallow depth of field.”

Photographyblog reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“Image quality is generally very good. Chromatic aberrations are well controlled, geometric distortion is impressively low, and the Super Spectra coatings successfully prevent contrast loss attributable to flare.”
Rating: ★★★★½

Ephotozine reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“Pancake lenses seem to becoming somewhat fashionable at the moment, due to their small size. Whether having a slim lens is that beneficial on a full size SLR body is open to debate, but at least the optical performance of this lens alone, makes it well worthy of consideration.”
Rating: ★★★½☆

Techradar reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“We found that its focusing motor was much quieter than the 18-55mm kit lens sold with many of Canon’s APS-C format DSLRs… we think that it should be possible to shoot video and focus automatically without the sound of the AF system spoiling the footage.”
rating: N/A

SLRGear reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“It’s impressive what Canon has managed to pack into a very small package here. Excellent results for sharpness, CA and distortion, and only some corner shading when used wide open on full-frame – which you could call the “character” of this lens. For the price, it’s well worth the money.”
Rating: ★★★★½

Thephoblographer reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“To sum things up, I was extremely surprised with the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens, the image quality delivered was beyond what I expected from a lens at this price point. I do wish the manual focus feel was a bit more responsive, and the AF speed just a touch faster, but I can certainly live with it as-is and have no issues.”
rating: N/A

Lenstests reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“Overall the image quality is quite astonishing for a lens that’s as small as the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM and that comes at such a low price tag. This also means that from now on you can always have a decent f/2.8 prime lens with you that virtually needs no space in your camera bag!”
rating: N/A

The-digital-picture reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“In AI Servo mode, the 40 STM performs quite well. Honestly, I thought it would fall apart when given a reasonably challenging target. Of course, finding challengingly fast moving subjects that fill a 40mm frame (and do not impose a safety hazard to the photographer) is a bit of a challenge.”
rating: N/A

Photozone reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“The optical performance is certainly very impressive. This is especially true for the bitingly sharp center but even the border and corner quality is on a very high level straight from f/2.8. The very low amount of lateral CAs contributes to the very high sharpness perception and the barrel distortion is nothing to worry about either.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

PCMAG reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is the total package as far as lenses go. It’s compact, inexpensive, sharp, and shows minimal distortion. The STM motor makes it a great companion to the T4i, and the full-frame coverage means that it will remain useful to APS-C shooters if they decide to move up to a full-frame camera.”
Rating: ★★★★½

Lenstip reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“The results of the Canon EF 40 mm f/2.8 STM are a very nice surprise. Preparing myself for testing this “pancake” I expected a lot of problems on the edge of full frame sensor. There were some problems but not very serious ones – you can easily wave them aside. The mere comparison of the cons and pros lists proves this device is really worth your interest.”
Rating: ★★★★☆

Whatdigitalcamera reviews the Canon 40mm EF f/2.8 STM and writes;
“Any small and lightweight lens that’s capable of producing sharp results is likely to end up a favourite, and the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM has a lot going for it. Quite whether it has the same appeal for professional photographers as it does for enthusiasts is debatable, as its in-movie autofocusing properties will be less of a concern for more serious videographers who will prefer to focus manually.”
