I don't have a Canon (Pentax K10D here), but while I'm saving up to get a 50-500mm lens, I've bought an old Vivitar 2x matched multiplier and it seems to work really well even if it means going completely manual. A small sample is posted on my site using a Sigma 70-300mm lens to give an idea of the difference. One thing for sure, make sure you're mounted on a tripod or you will shake and thus blur the photo, even if you did focus correctly. I noticed in the forum thread that you had a hard time with this using the 1.4x TC, so a tripod is your friend (I've practically welded my camera to it since I like to do nature photography).

The 100-400 would give much sharper results than the 70-300 with an extender.

I have a 70-300 but it is not an IS nor is it an L series lens.

The 100-400 has special glass that will give much crisper results than the cheaper 70-300

To me it is worth it.

I made this update two years ago and very happy I did.
The 100-400 lens is a much higher quality lens and you will find that it is not only the reach but also the lens speed, focus speed and image quality that is better.
You do need to know how to use it so read the manual and I always try to use a tripod or a monopot if I can but can be used hand held.
